Democrats fear falling into GOP trap on government shutdown
Source: The Hill
Centrist Democrats fear their party could blunder into a government shutdown this month as Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) and House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.) are taking a hard line on the government funding package that needs to pass by Sept. 30.
Democrats broadly agree the looming expiration of enhanced health insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act combined with deep cuts to Medicaid that Republicans enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will hit millions of Americans with higher health care costs. But they are divided over whether to derail a short-term continuing resolution to keep the government funded in October unless Republicans agree to spend tens of billions of dollars in additional health care spending.
One Democratic senator who requested anonymity to comment on political dynamics within the Senate Democratic Caucus said progressives who are angling to run for president have pushed for the most confrontational approach with Republicans.
Most people want to avoid brinkmanship except some of those people who may be running for president because I think people understand that its important to keep the government operating, the lawmaker said. The senator said its not clear how voting against a short-term clean funding measure and forcing a government shutdown would give Democrats more leverage over Republicans on the looming expiration of the Affordable Care Act subsidies.

Most voters don't want to see a government shutdown. The Republicans are going to end up with their health cuts anyways, and they will be held responsible for it.

(29,762 posts)The Hill again:
Let's talk about where the bear shits in the buckwheat. Whoever decided, whether they be moderates or progressives, to pass the CR back in March gave Krasnov everything he wanted and now after the Bill was passed that gutted our social safety net Democrat's efforts got a hell of a lot harder, trying to undo a Bill, good fucking luck with that.
The time to fight, the time to shut down the government until Democrats got protections for our social safety net was last March.
Biggest political blunder I have seen in my lifetime. I am 78 years old and I can weather storm that is coming. My daughter has been planning for years not to have Social Security or Medicare.
The fucking article from the right wing rag The Hill does nothing more than pit Progressive and Moderate Democrats against one another.
Back in March the vast majority of Democrats were opposed to passing the CR, only a handful of Senate Democrats kneecapped the majority. That is just a fact. Chuck Schumer told Chris Hayes what his strategy was, (I heard him say it) By giving Krasnov his CR he will burn it all down and then we win the election. Well, Krasnov is burning down our social safety net, it doesn't look so good now, after the fact.
GOTV if we have elections.

(17,000 posts)that Rs control the House and the Senate and the WH. They don't need Dems to keep the gov't open. Dems are merely a pesky minority right now.

(9,351 posts)that's getting shittier with each jobs report, retail prices and consumer confidence report. Fuck it...vote to keep it open and it's ALL on Trump and Republicans in Congress.

(17,000 posts)Dems are the minority in both the House and the Senate. Rs can pass any bill they want to keep the govt open.

(9,351 posts)to punish migrants even more for crossing the border multiple times. Dems can vote either way but they have no majority. Trump wants them to TRY to shut Government down for a blame game. Just because it will remain open because of a Republican majority makes no diff to Trump.

(17,000 posts)I'm guessing Rs had enough votes to pass this immigration bill. It didn't really matter if a few Ds also voted for it.

(4,107 posts)a senator objects, it takes 60 votes to proceed. So no, unless Democratic senators agree not to object, Republicans cannot unilaterally pass a continuing resolution.
There is a nuclear option that could circumvent Senate Rule 22 requiring 60 votes for cloture. While it has been used for nominations, neither party is willing to go nuclear on passing legislation. Once used, the Senate would be irrevocably transformed into just a more exclusive version of the House of Representatives.

(6,765 posts)They can't blame Democrats, they're in the majority. If there isn't anything we can get, because they don't want to give us anything in exchange for our votes, then shut 'er down.
It's time we started playing hardball and quit mollycoddling and playing like old line politics still works. If the government shuts down because of their stupidity, then let it go. And start pointing the fingers.
