A bomb threat was directed at the home of the Democratic leader of the New Mexico state Senate Thursday, prompting the evacuation of students from a nearby school on Santa Fe's east side.

The threat, which led to the evacuation of Santa Fe Preparatory School and precautions at other nearby schools, was directed at Senate Majority Leader Peter Wirth, D-Santa Fe, confirmed Senate Democratic spokesperson Chris Nordstrum.

Wirth said in a written statement Thursday he was "grateful to our state and local law enforcement agencies for their swift and professional response to this serious matter, and to the school officials who skillfully managed the disturbance."

"Political violence and threats against elected officials have no place in our democratic society and are never an acceptable way to address political differences," Wirth said. "Regardless of our political views, we must reject intimidation and work together through peaceful, lawful means to resolve our disagreements."
