Justin Hickens says he was standing about 20 yards from Charlie Kirk as the influential conservative activist addressed a large crowd at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Then, in the middle of Kirks remarks, Hickens heard "a big loud shot. I saw a bunch of blood come out of Charlie," Hickens told NBC News Tom Llamas. "I saw his body kind of kick back and go limp, and everybody dropped to the ground.
When people realized Kirk had been shot, they started running from the outdoor pavilion area, some knocking over barricades as they fled, Hickens said. Hickens is one of scores of people who had gathered to see Kirk, a leading conservative voice and prominent ally of President Donald Trump and who regularly held events on high school and college campuses.
In videos and images posted on social media, attendees can be heard yelling and scrambling for safety. In interviews, students described hearing a booming pop noise and seeing a bloodied Kirk fall back in his chair. Kirk later died at a hospital. He was 31. The shooter remained at large Wednesday night.
During a news conference hours after the shooting, UVU Police Chief Jeff Long said six police officers were at the event, which had about 3,000 attendees. There were "some plainclothes police officers that were in the crowd as well," he said. "We train for these things, and you think you have things covered, and these things, unfortunately, they happen," he said. "You try to get your bases covered, and unfortunately, today we didn't. Because of that, we had this tragic incident."

Worship guns at all costs.
Why should the cops countervene that fact?

Can I Carry a Firearm at UVU? Your Guide to Utah Valley Universitys Firearm Policy
Yes, with certain limitations, you can carry a firearm at Utah Valley University (UVU) if you are legally permitted to do so under Utah state law. Utah is an open carry state, and UVU, as a public institution, generally adheres to state law regarding firearms. However, its crucial to understand the specific nuances and restrictions outlined in Utah state law and UVUs policies to avoid unintentional violations.
Understanding Utahs Firearm Laws and UVUs Policies
Utahs firearms laws are relatively permissive. Generally, individuals 21 years of age or older who are legally allowed to possess a firearm can openly carry a firearm without a permit. Furthermore, individuals 18 years of age or older can obtain a Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP), which allows them to carry a concealed handgun. This is a summary and we encourage readers to review Utah Code Title 53, Chapter 5a: Uniform Firearms Act.

(11,123 posts)Allowing concealed carry on college campuses.
The person must be at least 18 with a provisional CC, can carry on a college campus and keep the weapon in their dorm room. Law changed as of May of this 2025.

(52,385 posts)and a few deranged people are still running with it. On both sides probably. Fight, fight, fight was a message, an enablement almost. "If you don't fight like hell, you're not gonna have a country anymore." Republicans were silent about it. They're still trying to debunk the J6 Committee conclusions. Their agenda is more important than peace, or truth. I have no idea how we get out of this era or mindset.

(5,123 posts)As the radius of a circle increases, the area of the circle increases as a square of the radius.
A = πr²
So the number of people necessary to secure the area increases rather dramatically.
I seriously doubt that anyone seriously considered that an attempt would be made at 200m distance as that, despite what all the keyboard Chris Kyle's out there will say, is not any easy shot.
If they did, they would have posted people on the various rooftops that had LOS to the stage and locked down access to those areas.
Additionally, historically, a lot of assissinations are/were close range and personal (JFK and MLK notwithstanding) by someone getting within almost touching range of the target.

(37 posts)Security begins with permissive weapon possession. Everyone there is at risk..A university campus is no exception. Kirk was as much at risk as everyone in that event. He just happened to be a known public figure and an intended target of the shooter. This is the only reason we hear about this shooting and no other shootings in Utah.
