New Jersey’s restrictions on carrying guns in places like bars, casinos, health care facilities and other public settings were largely upheld by the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals on Wednesday.

The ruling comes as other federal courts across the country have maintained laws that restrict where guns can be carried in public.

The ongoing saga began with a 2022 U.S. Supreme Court ruling known as the Bruen decision, which drastically expanded gun carry rights in public. In response, blue states like New Jersey passed laws creating so-called “sensitive places” where carrying a firearm is prohibited. That in turn led gun advocates to sue New Jersey.

A divided 3rd Circuit on Wednesday allowed many of the state’s gun prohibitions to stay in place — although some of the state’s most “far-reaching” restrictions remain enjoined.
