GOP Senator Leads Pushback Against Trump's 'Department of War' Rebrand

Source: Daily Beast

Sen. Rand Paul promised to lead congressional opposition against any attempt the Trump administration makes to formally rename the Department of Defense the “Department of War.”

On Tuesday morning, the Kentucky Republican told CNN’s Manu Raju that he is against the name change. “I think it sends a bad signal to the world,” said Paul, 62. “In a world with nuclear weapons, I think glorifying war… is not something I’m in favor of.”

On Friday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order that gave the Department of Defense the secondary title of “Department of War.” Though Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has boasted on social media about the new name, the change is largely an aesthetic one. It would take congressional approval to change the name of the Department of Defense, and Paul said he would lead opposition to the name change if the topic came to the Senate floor.

Paul’s criticism of the administration’s comes after he blasted Vice President JD Vance for telling a critic he “doesn’t give a s--t” about allegations the U.S. military committed a war crime for its strike on an alleged drug boat that killed 11 people.

Rand Paul is equal parts nut job and total ass but he's not a moron and I think he's finally realized that he's gotten all he can out of Trump and now his hatred of a strong central government is kicking in. I'm sure he's always known he can't trust Trump but figured he could be controlled, now he's seeing that others in the GOP can't or won't do it and so he's going to start pushing back.

If we're going to win against Trump we are going to end up having to sometimes support people we despise if their goal aligns with ours. I'm not saying support him in everything just selectively. He looks like he's carving out a niche against Trump and I think it can be used to drive a wedge into MAGA.

Meaning he opposes overseas dalliances and supposedly would approve of reproductive rights and legalization of marijuna (from the perspective of "removing regulations" ). But on the distaff side, that means he's anti-Civil Rights because it imposes "regulations".

He'll still support the majority of what Trump demands and assuming Trump isn't six feet under he'll court him for his support. If Trump is gone and if the moronic MAGA idiots are weaker he'll then turn around like a snake and point to this and other minor things to show how he stood up to Trump and opposed him.
