'Chipocalypse Now': Trump threatens Chicago with 'Department of War' and suggests ICE raids imminent

Source: The Independent

Saturday 06 September 2025 12:52 EDT

Communities across Chicago are preparing for Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids to begin as soon as Saturday, which President Donald Trump appeared to confirm in a bizarre Truth Social post this morning.

For weeks, the Trump administration has said Chicago is its next target in fulfilling the president’s mass deportation agenda. But they’ve provided few details about when it could begin or what law enforcement officials would be involved.

On Saturday morning, the president appeared to confirm Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s suspicion that operations would begin this weekend, ahead of Mexican Independence Day celebrations, with an AI-generated image of himself boasting about deportations. “‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning…’ Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” Trump’s post read.

Attached was an AI-generated version of Trump in a cowboy hat, U.S. Army fatigues and aviator sunglasses with military helicopters flying low over the Chicago skyline, engulfed in flames. On the image was written, “Chipocalypse Now”, appearing to reference the 1979 Vietnam War movie, “Apocalypse Now” directed by Francis Ford Coppola. “I love the smell of napalm in the morning,” is perhaps the film’s most famous line.

Trump should be impeached for this. I know he won't be, but he should.

Department of War is going internal, kind of like the Chinese military. If any DUers be wondering why the world's largest military hasn't been at war with anyone lately, it's because China uses it for internal population control and intimidation.

We need to keep our heads about AI use. Because AI will be one tool he uses to foment panic and chaos to justify invoking martial law. Nowadays, his digital team or his sympathizers do this so he doesn't get charged with saying the words himself, like he did on Jan 6.

And there's no way AI said that in the tweet either - it wouldn't have the training. That was Trump, or flunkeys acting on his behalf (and I reckon for bullshitting about Chicago, he'd insist on OKing whatever they wrote).

Since the supine SC 6 gave him immunity for acts as president, he knows he won't get charged for this. He won't need to pretend "my digital team said this without my permission".

Right. AI isn't trump. AI can't be proven to be "internal" to the Dept of War, either.
And that's exactly the point -- the felon won't be accountable for what humans do as a result of "others" using AI.

And yes, as of at least a year ago, an AI developer, Mo Gawdat, claimed that AI does have all the LLM knowledge on the planet, including the making of videos, memes or anything movie based that could be laid out on Truth Social.

It's one thing for trump to own and use Truth Social, per the OP, to do war talk, as he did:

On Saturday morning, the president appeared to confirm Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s suspicion that operations would begin this weekend, ahead of Mexican Independence Day celebrations, with an AI-generated image of himself boasting about deportations. “‘I love the smell of deportations in the morning…’ Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR,” Trump’s post read.

It's another thing to draw the conclusion that two things -- renaming the DOD, and posting an AI about going to war with blue cities -- are tantamount to a declaration of war.
I'd still call what he's trying out, his "story" of war. Same as the story that he ended seven wars. You call it bullshitting about Chicago.

I'll wait until Pritzker tells us what trump's lying about and actually doing.

It's Trump saying he's going to war, and his flunkies illustrating it with AI pictures based on "Apocalypse Now". And no, I don't think AI came up with "Chipocalypse Now" either. Humans said "we'll use that, and "I love the smell of...", and told AI to use Apocalypse Now for the pictures.

A typical AI may have had "all the LLM knowledge" (a tautology, surely) a year ago, but the point is that "the Department of War" is from yesterday, not a year ago.

There's still a law on the books about using the military on civilians.

But as you also said, he's bullshitting about Chicago.

You misquote me with " 'all the LLM knowledge" (a tautology, surely)' ", when I said "AI developer, Mo Gawdat, claimed that AI does have all the LLM knowledge on the planet, including the making of videos, memes or anything movie based..." Any prompt to AI to create an apocalyptic war message can easily produce the meme that trump posted on TS.

It was used as a provocation. JB says he's "threatened," but I doubt JB will be provoked to act on that ahead of what happens on the ground in Chicago.
