Rep. Don Bacon harshly criticized President Donald Trump's tariff policies Friday, telling The World-Herald that it's "Economics 101" that tariffs are bad for the economy.
Bacon, a five-term Republican who is not seeking re-election next year in the Omaha-area 2nd District, has long argued that tariffs are harmful and that Trump has violated the Constitution by imposing them unilaterally.
He spoke to The World-Herald after the government's August jobs report showed that employers added only 22,000 jobs last month. Revisions to previous months' data also showed that the economy lost a net 13,000 jobs in June, marking the first month of net job loss since December 2020.
"I think there are storm clouds on the horizon," Bacon said. "Most economists will tell you tariffs don't work. Last time we did major tariffs was the 1930s. It did not work."
