Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III asserted the Smithsonian Institution's control over its programming and content this week in a letter addressed to the White House after the Trump administration demanded a review of the institution's exhibits, a Smithsonian official confirmed to ABC News.
The White House announced last month that it plans to conduct a wide-ranging review of the Smithsonian's museum exhibitions, materials and operations to ensure they align with President Donald Trump's view of American history.
In the Sept. 3 letter, Bunch responded to Trump's demand that his administration review the Smithsonian's exhibitions, materials and operations. It also said that the Smithsonian, which is the world's largest museum complex, will remain control over programming and content and that it will do its own review of exhibits, material and operations, the official told ABC News.
Following its internal review, Bunch said he will brief the White House on its findings, but the Smithsonian will not be sending a formal report to the White House, the Smithsonian official added. The museum's review of exhibits is expected to be complete by the end of the year.

(9,040 posts)This is why we are well and truly fraked.
The fact that anyone would be willing to even entertain the idea of aligning anything with his 'view of history' is so laughable and ridiculous that the idea should just be part of a comedy routine. Just as the other crap they are doing should be. Just as their attempts to murder the segment of the population that does not make them richer. (Oh wait, that should be prosecuted, not part of a comedy show.)
But, let's all wait until the midterms. The death and destruction of our societal net and those who depend on it, which will happen as quickly as they can make it, are just collateral damage anyway, right? I mean, those people don't work. They don't make someone else rich and they are not rich themselves. So, why worry about any of that, right? And, even if there is a 'victory' in the courts, the regime won't obey it.
(This is just the latest attempt to continue their fascist takeover. I am glad that the Smithsonian was willing to tell them to kiss it, but this is just one of their grift attempts. There have been others that worked 'bigly' because the people in charge were too busy kissing that orange ass to realize they were cutting off their own... freedoms. So, there is already plenty of precedent. There should not be, but that is where we are, now. The programming worked.)

Their resistance is important--we should not comply in advance or capitulate easily. But unless courts rule and SOMEONE enforces that, he will have his way.

(3,534 posts)The Smithsonian will sue and win. The question is who will stop his brownshirts from going in anyway? Is there an armed force that will follow court orders instead of Trump's, and physically defend court decisions? Without that, the end is predictable.
But there's value in not making it easy, and making sure the public knows what is happening.
If Trump does what he did to the Kennedy Center, no one will come. I wonder what happens to the collection when there is no income. At least there will be artists to perform in the Kennedy Center when the country comes to it's senses. Collections that aren't protected will not re-appear.
