Mark Volman, Turtles and Flo & Eddie Co-Founder and Singer on 'Happy Together,' Dies at 78
Source: Variety
Mark Volman, a founding member of the 1960s rock band the Turtles and singer known as Flo of Flo & Eddie, died in Nashville, Tenn. on Friday after a brief sudden illness. He was 78.
Born in Los Angeles in 1947, Volman began playing music and performing at an early age. After graduating from Westchester High School in 1965, he founded the Turtles with Howard Kaylan alongside lead guitarist Al Nichol, rhythm guitarist Jim Tucker, bassist Chuck Portz and drummer Don Murray. They released pop hits such as It Aint Me Babe, Elenore and the No 1 Billboard Hot 100 track Happy Together, on which he sang harmony.
The Turtles broke up in 1970, leading Volman and Kaylan to form Flo & Eddie. As a musical duo, they toured with Frank Zappas Mothers of Invention and created background tracks for various artists from T. Rex (on Bang a Gong (Get It On)) to Bruce Springsteen (Hungry Heart). They also created music for television, notably the childrens series Strawberry Shortcake.
In his late forties, Volman returned to school to complete his Bachelors Degree at Loyola Marymount University. He graduated in 1997 and then completed an M.F.A. in 1999. He then began teaching music business courses at the college level, most consistently at Belmont University in Nashville.

I liked him best when he was with Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.

1. He is not human but is an evil entity which can not die
2. He is doing this to put the final nail in MY coffin and is living just to spite me personally
Good thing I'm an atheist and my faith hasn't been shattered as a result. Only "Clots and Prayers" from me!

(6,557 posts)Unfortunately, I did have a spiritual foundation that has been shaken to the core. I'm left with nothing, now that I'm at the end of my life, whereas before, I was at least hopeful and looking forward to seeing what was on the Other Side.

(6,557 posts)tho you may never have known them personally. They're pieces of your youth, now laying shattered in the dust. I've missed several that we've lost over the last couple of years. Some of them I thought were terrific actors or singers, and I miss their voice in the current tense. But the one that hit me the hardest was Robby Steinhardt. That's when I knew I was past the "use by" date. His voice, his violin, his lyrics were so much a part of me. I couldn't have felt worse if I actually had known him personally. He was that big a part of my life from the time I was about 17 on. Some people, you just don't get over.
And then there are others you wish had passed on to "wherever" decades ago....

(54 posts)Listened to it for many hours in my dorm room! They weren't with Zappa that long but made many memorable recordings. Loved most of the Flo and Eddie work as well.
