Trump Is Exploring Ways to Take Over the Sept. 11 Memorial and Museum

Source: NYT

President Trump is exploring ways to take federal control of the 9/11 Memorial & Museum, according to two White House officials, amid criticism from some Sept. 11 victims’ families over the site’s finances and leadership.

The officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations, said the discussions have been preliminary and exploratory, and it was unclear exactly how the federal government would take control of the site in Lower Manhattan.

But as a candidate last year, Mr. Trump offered a preview of one potential option, pledging to designate the site of the Sept. 11 attacks a national monument. During a rally last September in Uniondale, N.Y., he said he wanted to ensure the “hallowed ground and the memory of those who perished there will be preserved for all time, preserved forever.”

Marc La Vorgna, a spokesman for the museum, also questioned the legal basis for such a takeover. “We are certain that there is nothing in existing law that would give the federal government the unilateral ability to take the site over,” he said in a statement.

Trump has claimed to be in at least two states as events unfolded. In NYC he claims to have gone down to ground zero. He also claimed on the day to have been in New Jersey, where he watched muslims dancing and celebrating. What we do know - because it’s on tape - is that he did appear on network TV in their NYC studio to give his opinion on the effects of the attack. His only real comment was that as a result of the attacks, he now owned the tallest building in Manhattan. This - unsurprisingly - was a lie, but in the face of an unknown number of deaths - early estimates were around 30k - Trump could only see how it elevated him and his buildings.
There has never been a time in Trumps life when his psychopathy has not been on display.

I'd suppose he'd add tales of his imaginary heroics at the site.

Fortunately the site is owned by the Port Authority which might make it harder for the feds to claim it (as I understand it).

Now, some New Yorkers are speaking out against any such takeover in New York, including the museum itself. The September 11 Memorial and Museum president issued a statement that they have raised $750 million in private funds for the museum, adding, "At a time when the Federal government is working to cut costs, assuming the full operating expenses for the site makes no sense."

Retired Sergeant William Keegan, who was a first responder on 9/11 says that he agrees. "When the museum is staffed and run by people from New York that care about that place in a very personal way, that's the way to go," Keegan said.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul had a similar message, saying the museum "belongs to New Yorkers -- the families, survivors and first responders who have carried this legacy for more than two decades and ensured we never forget."

As far as the ceremony at Ground Zero next week, the reports say Trump is not expected to attend, but will go to a ceremony at the Pentagon and then a Yankees game.

12. I only heard a blurb about this

I've been doing other things this evening, all of them thankfully non-news related. But when I heard this news snippet, promoting the upcoming late night news, I thought, "This jerk has no clue whatsoever as to what the presidency is about."

Every day we get crazier and crazier "ventures" from him. Blowing up Venezuelans (or not? Is it AI?) Picking a war with Venezuela.

He dumps concrete on the Rose Garden.

He wants to call the DOD the Department of War (as a former PR person can I just tell you how effing counterproductive that is?)

He has protesters brutally beaten by ICE.

I could go on, but it's an endless parade of distractions from the Epstein files. He's doing every crazy thing he can think of because that is hanging over his head.

He is not even vaguely acting like a president. He is acting like a criminal who is threatened by being exposed for his crimes.
