WASHINGTON Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., the chair of the health committee, is holding his cards close to the vest, declining to elaborate after he said he will conduct oversight of the country's top health official and a recent shake-up at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Cassidy, a doctor who has been supportive of vaccines, is in a delicate position as the top Republican on the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee who provided a pivotal vote to confirm Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. after he secured assurances about vaccines. Cassidy is also running for re-election next year.
Cassidy declined Tuesday to say whether he regrets his vote for Kennedy or whether he has confidence in him after Kennedy triggered CDC Director Susan Monarez's removal, leading to a spate of resignations by top CDC employees who accused Kennedy of undermining an influential vaccine committee.
I am reserving judgment because we dont know whos right or wrong, Cassidy told NBC News in the Capitol. But the president of the United States wants radical transparency. I totally agree with Donald J. Trump. We need radical transparency because what is at stake here is childrens health, and we need to focus on those issues related to children.

(60,512 posts)He is a doctor. I wonder if his oath as a doctor especially combined with his oath of office REQUIRE him to use his knowledge, training and power to prevent the destruction of the medical system.
As to reelection, he may have a difficult choice. He is definitely not the most MAGA and actually voted to impeach Trump. I suspect his votes have always come from the middle. His vote for Kennedy, when he was the person best positioned to stop him should make him a disappointment to many who voted for him. I wonder if the promise he extracted from Kennedy was just to save face as he voted for him or if he actually believed him.
He may consider that he needs to double down on Kennedy rather that joining any effort to remove him or at least try to control him (which is probably impossible.)
He might have the choice of losing because he lost both the middle and MAGA or losing because MAGA is too powerful on its own.
