Trump set to move Space Command headquarters to Alabama from Colorado, sources say

WASHINGTON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - The Trump administration is planning to announce as early as Tuesday that it will relocate U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado Springs, Colorado, to Huntsville, Alabama, according to a U.S. official and a person familiar with the deliberations.
The Pentagon's public affairs website said President Donald Trump was expected to make a "U.S. Space Command HQ Announcement" at 2 p.m. EDT (1800 GMT).
The decision would reverse a move made under former President Joe Biden's administration, which had selected Colorado Springs as the permanent home for the military's newest combatant command in 2023.
A relocation could spark controversy, with critics arguing the switch appears designed to favor Alabama, a reliably Republican state, over Colorado, which has increasingly voted Democratic in recent elections. Space Command currently operates from Peterson Space Force Base in Colorado Springs on an interim basis. About 1,700 personnel work at Space Command, according to congressional records.

(160,177 posts)When I started seeing some buzzy news referencing DOD early this morning, I was thinking it would be an announcement about a "renaming" of the "Department of Defense" to the "Department of War" (which conceivably could still happen at that time).

(41,832 posts)Most folks already know Huntsville's been a key military/tech town for a while ... looks like trump's moving the space op command back to where it started...
In 1950, about 1,000 personnel were transferred from Fort Bliss, Texas, to Redstone Arsenal to form the Ordnance Guided Missile Center (OGMC). Central to this was a group of about 200 German scientists and engineers, led by Wernher von Braun; they had been brought from Nazi Germany to the United States by Colonel Holger Toftoy under Operation Paperclip following World War II. Assigned to the center at Huntsville, they settled and raised families...
The city is nicknamed "The Rocket City" for its close association with U.S. space missions.[43] On January 31, 1958, ABMA placed America's first satellite, Explorer 1, into orbit using a Jupiter-C launch vehicle, a descendant of the Redstone. This brought national attention to Redstone Arsenal and Huntsville, with widespread recognition of this being a major center for high technology...
Huntsville was selected as the permanent home of the United States Space Operations Command in 2020, but in 2023 the Pentagon announced that the temporary headquarters would be expanded and remain in Colorado....[46]

And with respect to Huntsville - NASA has had it's "Space Camp" there for some time -

Nobody want to give up COS for 'Bama. I sure wouldn't.
As is said on many occasions in the USSF: Semper Soon...
Although Huntsville is said to be more culturally aware and politically moderate (though still red) than the rest of Alabama, the lifestyle in southern Colorado is far more appealing to far more people. The Space Force will lose competent officers, and the support staff will be a bunch of Jethro's.

And they have been arguing back and forth ever since regarding where it would eventually be headquartered.

(I think their chain of command went through the Air Force which is HQ'd in CO, although NASA hasa space presence in Huntsville)
(ETA - the "Command" goes back the '50s before Sputnik but I expect Sputnik blasted the military into high gear)

(3,599 posts)The Air Force Academy is also in the Springs and and has increasing course offerings on strategic space. This colocation is an excellent match.
Trump is doing this to hurt a blue state and reward a red one, and also to reflexively nix a Biden policy. Not exactly an algorithm for mission success.
This should be added to the list of things for the next Dem president (if there is one) to reverse, no matter how expensive.

(160,177 posts)has someone as mayor who 45 would not "like". Yemi Mobalade (elected in 2023 and ran as an independent).

Colorado Springs Mayor Yemi Mobolade discusses historic win as first Black immigrant to lead city
He immigrated here from that "shit hole" country of Nigeria. But he is one of the Nigerian Christians (who live in the south of Nigeria, where the Muslims are mostly in the north), and was very devoted to it.
Remember that much of what 45's administration does is for white supremacy and the election of this mayor suggests that the city is not as "deep red" as it used to be.

(1,164 posts)There is a strong Christian presence in Colorado Springs. Think of Focus on the Family, Young Life, Compassion International - the usual gang of suspects. Almost all of them are fundamentalist or leaning in that direction. The Evangelicals who live in Colorado Springs are some of Trump's biggest fans. They voted in this mayor because he is a staunch Christian - one of them despite the color of his skin. If anything, my hometown is becoming MORE red, not less.
BumRushDaShow
(160,177 posts)where you have Colorado Springs versus this -
Alabama towns first Black mayor, who had been locked out of office, wins election
"More red" (IMHO) would be to basically go foaming-at-the-mouth MAGat "red".

(127,247 posts)he was a pastor. I had figured that a runoff would be between Sally Clark (who we could at least talk to reasonably) and scumbag wayne williams, whom I thorougly despise. I was shocked when it ended up between williams and him. I knew that developers' dream williams would be an utter disaster. And, sadly, yemi has proven to be almost as bad as I figured he would be.

(8,258 posts)Space Force is a branch of the US Armed Forces that was initiated by Trump in his first term, and is headquartered in the Pentagon like all the other branches.

Space Command is an operational group that coordinates and directs the actions of several branches of the Armed Forces in terms of actions in space.

These are two separate entities.
It does appear that Trump wants to move Space Command, not Space Force.

(4,111 posts)the US/Canada North American Aerospace Defense Command. In the early 2000s, USSPACECOM was disestablished and its missions subsumed by US Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM). At that time, US Northern COMMAND (USNORTHCOM) was established and co-located with NORAD.
Peterson AFB, on the east side of Colorado Springs, remains the home for USNORTHCOM and NORAD. USSPACECOM will move to Huntsville, Alabama.
As noted in another post, the US Space Force is not a command but a military service which is headquartered in the Pentagon.
Disclosure - I spent mid-1986 through mid-1990 assigned to the first USSPACECOM, working in two Ops Centers within Cheyenne Mountain. Both Centers were moved to Vandenberg AFB, CA, when USSTRATCOM took over the space missions.
