More than 85 climate experts call Energy Department report on greenhouse gases "not scientifically credible"

Source: CBS News

Updated on: September 2, 2025 / 9:03 AM EDT

An international group of more than 85 climate experts on Tuesday published a 439-page review arguing that a report by the Trump administration's Energy Department fails to "adequately represent the current scientific understanding of climate change," and it "exhibits pervasive problems" by misrepresenting scientific literature and cherry-picking data.

The Department of Energy's 151-page report, "A Critical Review of Impacts of Greenhouse Gas Emissions on the U.S. Climate," was written by five authors who were hand-selected by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, a former fossil fuel executive. It included a controversial conclusion that "carbon dioxide-induced warming appears to be less damaging economically than commonly believed," and it states that "aggressive mitigation strategies" to address greenhouse gas emissions "could be more harmful than beneficial" - a statement that supports the oil and gas industry.

"Climate change is real, and it deserves attention. But it is not the greatest threat facing humanity," Wright said in a statement supporting the report's publication and conclusions.

CBS News reached out to the Department of Energy about the criticisms, but it has not responded.

He knows damn well the report he approved is propaganda garbage. The one thing he's right about is the report by international experts won't make a damn bit of difference in American politics. Mainstream media won't make a big stink about it, and will soon move on to the next piece of fecal matter flung from this administration in their ceaseless shitstorm of lies and outrages.

is more worrisome. Suppose you are right. We are in Reality Government where scenes change every 15 minutes, or the attention span of modernity.

It obviously doesn't fly with reputable climate scientists, but they are powerless to stop Trump from reversing the progress made duting Biden's term.

to shrink my purview. I have started caning chairs again. Rote accomplishment versus flailing angst at the expected tsunami.
Harari wrote a masterpiece, "Sapiens" that showed how social connections moved from family to religion to money. We all need to connect and the world wide commonality is now money.
The irony is, money stands for nothing.

Family, tribe, community -- all involve personal human connections. We CARE, and share a sense of togetherness.

Religion may expand the number of people in a type of community, but it has long been a means of control and manipulation by those who seek wealth and power.

Money abandons community altogether, treating people like commodities.

Which is not to say that all is lost. Many millions actually CARE about people they've never met, and protecting the precious ecosystems of this Earth which sustain life itself. Everyone should care for the latter, if only on the bssis of enlightened self interest.

These last 7+ months feels like a dark tunnel with no light at the end, but things change. The long arc of the moral universe bends towards justice, but only if enough good people pull together.

"Climate change is real, and it deserves attention. But it is not the greatest threat facing humanity," Wright said in a statement supporting the report's publication and conclusions.

It’s now the second greatest threat facing humanity. Wright and this administration come in first with their lies and deception.
