Graham Greene, Oscar-Nominated 'Dances with Wolves' Actor, Dies at 73

Source: Variety

Graham Greene, a Canadian actor best known for his Oscar-nominated turn in the 1990 film “Dances with Wolves,” died on Monday in Toronto after a battle with long illness. He was 73.

Greene made his debut in the 1979 Canadian drama series “The Great Detective” and in the 1983 film “Running Brave.” But his big Hollywood break came with “Dances with Wolves,” in which he co-starred as “Kicking Bird.” The role earned him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor in 1991. The film was nominated for 12 Oscars and won seven, including for best picture and best actor for Kevin Costner.

Afterward, he went on to appear in several major Hollywood releases, such as “Maverick,” “Die Hard with a Vengeance,” “The Green Mile,” “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2” and “Molly’s Game.”

And absolutely terrifying in Clearcut, a movie that deserves more attention than it got.

This is sad news.

We've watched all 15 seasons of Red Green a couple of times (it's on Prime), and have seen the Red Green on Stage a few times.

My wife was saying literally yesterday that she wanted him in the MCU.

He played that evil role SO well! I've been a fan for years and to see him play such a creepy and scary character was kind of jarring. I prefer to remember him for his 'lighter' roles like Kicking Bear. An accomplished man in so many ways.

Dunbar is miming: bison - “Tatanka!” is wonderful. The look of joy on his face the moment he makes a connection with another human being whose language he doesn’t understand.

“Tatanka!”

The movie is sappy and eye-rolling. But that one, very human moment of joy and recognition would not have been possible with a less-gifted actor.

Peace to you, Mr. Greene…

I was sorry to hear this news. I knew of him mostly from television - "Northern Exposure" and a couple of very nice turns on "Murder, She Wrote".

I absolutely loved this guy in every role he played. There was simply something special about him. I am sorry to learn he had been ill, and sorry that the world has lost him.

My his family, friends and fans remember him well, and find peace and comfort.

Besides all the movies & TV shows already mentioned, he was also great as Walter Crow Horse in Thunderheart, with Val Kilmer & Sam Shepard.

He was good in everything I ever saw with him. "Dances With Wolves," is one of my favorite movies, and he's a big part of it. "The Green Mile," "Thunderheart,", and "Wind River," to name a few.

Rest easy, Mr. Greene.
