Trump Says He Will Order Voter ID Requirement For Every Vote

Source: Huff Post/Reuters

Aug 30, 2025, 10:50 PM EDT | Updated 5 hours ago

Aug 30 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he will issue an executive order to require voter identification from every voter.

“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!,” Trump said on Truth Social. “Also, No Mail-In Voting, Except For Those That Are Very Ill, And The Far Away Military,” he added.

Trump has long questioned the U.S. electoral system and continues to falsely claim that his 2020 loss to Democratic President Joe Biden was the result of widespread fraud. The president and his Republican allies also have made baseless claims about widespread voting by non-citizens, which is illegal and rarely occurs.

For years, he has also called for the end of electronic voting machines, pushing instead for the use of paper ballots and hand counts - a process that election officials say is time-consuming, costly and far less accurate than machine counting.

From Google search AI

• States have primary authority: The Constitution's Elections Clause ((Article I,Section 4)) grants state legislatures the power to prescribe the "Times, Places and Manner" of holding elections for federal offices. States also have the authority to decide how elections are run, from setting voter registration rules to overseeing the counting of ballots.

•Congress can override states: The same clause gives Congress the power to "make or alter" any state regulations concerning federal elections. Over the years, Congress has used this power to pass landmark legislation, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to regulate elections and protect voting rights.

• The president has no explicit constitutional power: The Constitution does not grant the president any unilateral power to regulate or dictate how states run elections.

When I reregistered to vote after the move from Rochester to Eden Prairie, I had to show my ID. That is the normal procedure. The same for same day registering to vote. ID is required. TACO cannot demand ID be shown in every state.

He can take it to the Supreme Court. If they infringe on the right of the states, then we no longer are the United States of America. How the 6 conservatives live with that is beyond me.

Executive orders are nothing more than instructions from the White House to employees in the various executive agencies.

They don't apply to anybody else. They are not laws and they can't change laws.

The President can send an EO to the DoJ telling them to prioritize prosecutions for voter fraud. He cannot define what constitutes voter fraud. Only Congress and the legislatures can do that.

This EO bullshit comes up every week, and I have yet to see a single article from the MSM that explains what EOs are and what they are not.

To get the Voter ID you may need a Photo ID, Passport, Birth Certificate, etc. You'll need to work to collect this stuff, so you'll need a computer, internet access, transportation, etc. That is difficult for people who are struggling with day to day needs.

The result will be lower turnout, and that always favors republicans.

59. When PA attempted to implement Voter ID back in 2012
Sun Aug 31, 2025, 01:05 PM
Aug 31

it wasn't "free". There was even this smarmy ass who has since exited the state Legislature, who touted it as their ticket to Romney winning PA -

The cost of the birth certificate alone (at least for PA residents at the time) was $9. And good luck if you were resident of PA but born in another state in a rural area in the early part of the 20th century and they can't find your birth certificate or there was none - maybe just a notation in a bible.

All of this landed in the 2012 lawsuit filed by-then 93 year old Viviette Applewhite in Applewhite, et al. v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, et al.

From here - https://www.aclupa.org/news/remembering-voting-rights-champion/

(snip)

Pennsylvania’s 2012 law required one of very few types of photo identification. In reality, unless you had a driver’s license or non-driver state ID, you likely didn’t have the ID required to vote. Ludicrously, even a veterans’ picture ID, issued by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, didn’t suffice.

To get a state-issued ID in the post-9/11 security-enhanced world, you needed an original birth certificate and social security card, and the names had to match perfectly. Women were disproportionately affected by this requirement because they more often changed names with marriage. In that case, they also needed an original marriage certificate.

African-Americans, especially those born in the South, were also severely affected. Especially during the Jim Crow era, many Black people weren’t born in hospitals, and if they were, most hospitals did not prioritize keeping birth records for them. Viviette and her nine fellow plaintiffs in the lawsuit were representative of people without the required IDs who would have a difficult, if not impossible, time obtaining the needed ID.

(snip)

It was basically declared a "poll tax" (violation of the 24th Amendment), and the GOP loons kept modifying it and modifying it to reduce the requirements and then offer a "free ID". But ultimately, a stay was put on the law ahead of the 2012 election, and the law was mooted a couple years after the election when the GOP loon governor chose not to appeal.

Then he was voted out and lost a 2nd term and a GOP governor has, so far, not been elected since his election in 2011 (breaking a long "tradition" of the office alternating parties).

Paying for a picture ID would be a poll tax, illegal in all 50 states. Every citizen should be able to get an acceptable ID for free.
It's hard to live in this century without needing one for a number of reasons anyway. My doctors insist on an ID and my Medicare card on every visit.

who came through a time when getting the required documents is beyond being a chore - it's next to impossible due to poor record-keeping at many municipal/county/state offices - and that includes stuff needed for the current "Real ID".

You also have an added burden on women who marry and being required to present or get an "original" (albeit, with a state seal) copy of their marriage certificate, which adds a "cost" that should also be considered a "poll tax". But since women are 2nd class citizens, the patriarchs don't care.

I expect as is happening more and more nowadays, women are keeping their "maiden names" when they marry and you will see far fewer "hyphenated last names" because that would affect men too, who would also need their marriage certificate to clarify why the last name doesn't "match" their birth name.

It's a ridiculous "solution" for something that has been shown over and over and over and over and over as not being any "significant problem".

71. Republicans hate executive orders, except when they don't (From 2015)
Sun Aug 31, 2025, 02:49 PM
Aug 31

When Obama circumvents lawmakers with executive actions, the right sees a scandal. When Republicans do it, suddenly conservatives don't mind.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/republicans-hate-executive-orders-except-when-they-dont-msna599626

In recent years, it seems every time President Obama tires of Congress' ineptitude and takes executive action, Republicans use it as clear evidence of Obama's tyrannical tendencies. It's up to elected legislators to approve new policies, we're told, and it's up to chief executives to implement those policies.

Executive orders, the argument goes, undermine the American system and show contempt for institutional norms. "Executive overreach" is a threat to us all.

Whether or not the president's critics ever actually believed these talking points, it's interesting how much conservatives are outraged by executive actions, except when they're not.

Nobody has done as many as 400 in a single term since Truman, 75 years ago. (Note : Republicans controlled both the Senate and the House during 2 of Truman's years, unlike Trump who has had a fully Republican controlled Congress.

And while FDR had the most, and some of his were overturned as unconstitutional, very few were blatantly unconstitutional at the time he signed them like a whole boatload of Trump's. (The worst of FDR's being the Internment of Japanese Americans. which was absolutely indefensible).

Sun Aug 31, 2025, 03:25 PM
Aug 31

This EO does not have the force of law at the state level.

BUT - it will give him a "justification" for ignoring the results of an election. He'll claim that some of the states allowed voting without photo ID, against his executive order, and that those results are invalid.

I can’t see this standing up in court. However, we do have a Trump-packed MAGAt-dominated Supreme Court, so there is that anomaly.

Regardless of the courts or their rulings, this is all just a setup - a pretense so that if he (or Republicans) lose in 2026 or 2028, he can scream “fraud” and claim that states with no voter ID or states that use mail-in voting “cheated” and also claim that the census is the problem (even though no undocumented people vote in our elections).

To simply tell him what the law is?

For his repeated overreaches and flouting of the law he should be punished. His illegal tariffs have also caused a lot of needless chaos and tension on a global scale. China and BRICS are capitalizing on it.
