Doctors at the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) would be barred from performing abortions, even in cases of rape and incest, under new rules proposed by the Trump administration.
The draft regulations, which also forbid providers from counseling female veterans about terminating a pregnancy, have generated nearly 20,000 comments in the federal register from conservative activists, abortion rights supporters and female veterans, many of them survivors of sexual assault.
I am a veteran, a mother, and my abortion saved my life, wrote Mary Dodson-Otten, a 41-year-old nurse and air force veteran who lives outside Atlanta, Georgia.
Dodson-Otten told the Guardian she ended a pregnancy in her 20s after she got pregnant by an abusive boyfriend who was a fellow service member. Without the abortion, she said, I dont think I would have survived, whether it would have been him hurting me or me hurting me.

(834 posts)Honestly, didn't know the VA offered abortion services. I am a female veteran and I also worked for the VA. Never heard of abortion services. The service probably came with strings attached. Women's health is still evolving at the VA.

(99,443 posts)Substantive progress was made under Democratic presidents. But youre a DUer, you know whats been going on with womens rights in the SCOTUS and with Trump and every person hes brought in. Also, you know whats being done to our civilian medical delivery system.
Im sorry. I dont usually follow the military as such, but I do follow womens rights, and that includes those in the military.
Edited to add: Trump and Hegseth are both abusive and rapists.

(99,443 posts)There have been times since Hillarylost that I have been beside myself with rage or grief or disbelief or all of them at once. Im old there were any number of things I thought were settled law, done and dusted, progress made toward the US becoming a mature society.
I dont need to go down the whole list, but take for instance the Imperial Presidency. Surely we settled that with Dick Nixon, right? Right? Apparently not.
Maybe this is the emoji I need tonight

(834 posts)Lost on the birth control coverage but won on the pregnancy discrimination. My employer cancelled my employee health insurance when I got pregnant. They would not give me light duty, so eventually my water broke 2 months early. Son was premature. Where was the VA thru all of this? No where to be found. I have a lot of anger about what is happening to women's rights. I feel like all the progress I made has been erased, including my service as a female combat veteran.
