Lifetime protection of former Presidents was ended in 1994. It was limited to 10 years. Under Obama, it was reinstated back to lifetime for former Presidents. It would take Congress to change it again. Vice Presidents only get 6 months of protection by law. After that its entirely up to the Government if it continues or not.
