US air force to grant military honors to Capitol rioter fatally shot on January 6

Source: The Guardian

The US air force will provide military funeral honors to Ashli Babbitt, the rioter fatally shot during the January 6 Capitol attack, marking another step in Donald Trump’s aggressive rehabilitation of the attack.

The under secretary of the air force, Matthew Lohmeier, confirmed the decision in an August letter to Babbitt’s family. The Biden administration previously denied Babbitt the honors, but Lohmeier said he was “persuaded that the previous determination was incorrect” after reviewing new information about her death.

Babbitt, 35, served in the air force and air national guard and was shot by Capitol Hill police as she climbed through a barricaded door near the House chamber in the mass frenzy to overthrow the results of the 2020 election. The air force had originally refused honors in February 2021, according to Lohmeier’s letter, saying they would “bring discredit upon the Air Force” due to the circumstances of her death. She was the only person killed by gunfire during the riot.

I provide Honor Guard services with other members of my American Legion Post at the funerals of local veterans. I am proud to do so. I would have to draw the line at such a funeral as this.

... she leveled out by not improving her knowledge and skills. My aunt retired as Master Sergeant, all the bars on her sleeve, after 23 years. She was always in Community College of the Air Force classes to keep improving herself and her abilities.

Just some info to share.

My grandfather was buried with full military honors--firing salute, playing taps, and my grandmother presented with the folded flag, because he fought in Argonne Forest water-filled trenches in WWI Germany. He fought fascists trying to conquer the world. Bobbitt was a traitor to her country breaking into the U.S. Capitol, trying to stop a free and fair election.

She had no honor.

She was warned not to breach that door where our representatives were hiding in fear for their lives. Babbitt had a backpack on her. What if it contained a bomb or other weapon(s)? There were only seconds for the agent to decide to stop her. She made the fatal choice. What did she expect? She was not thinking clearly by choosing to participate in mob behavior. This is not "blaming the victim" but rather a case of FAFO. Now Trump seeks to use her death as a PR stunt using the Air Force.

Regardless of her beliefs she refused a direct order of an armed person in a government facility while engaged in action that any reasonable person would interpret as potentially leading to violence while felonies were occuring.

She also violated her oath she took when she entered the USAF to uphold and defend the US Constitution of the United States against enemies foreign or domestic. On that day in January, Ashley Babbitt CHOSE to be a "domestic enemy".

The mere fact that she is going to be afforded military honors postmortem, is an INSULT to every living and deceased Veteran. Might as well give Benedict Arnold full honors when he switched sides during the American Revolution.

This is dishonor to the highest degree.

The 15 fallen insurgents, as well as the bystander Karl Kuhn, were regarded as the first "blood martyrs" of the Nazi Party and were remembered by Hitler in the foreword of Mein Kampf. The Nazi flag they carried, which in the course of events had been stained with blood, came to be known as the Blutfahne ('blood flag') and was brought out for the swearing-in of new recruits in front of the Feldherrnhalle when Hitler was in power.

One of the amazing things of that day remains the discipline of law enforcement. One single round was fired in defense and that was because there was no other choice based on where members of Congress were in relationship to Ashley Babbit. Their job is to protect the institution and it was not well executed but their primary was to ensure the continuity of government through the protection of the members of Congress and there they passed.
I have said this many times before hear and in other places. Democracy was saved by cops on 1/6. US Capitol police, Metropolitan Police, Maryland State Troopers, Virginia State Troopers, Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria, Montgomery, Prince George’s, Prince William, hell, even State Troopers got to the Capitol
Before the National Guard.

You can motherfuck them all you want here, but mostly local with a smattering of Federal Police saved democracy

Facts:

Ashli Babbitt served a total of 12 years in the Air Force, including active duty, Reserves, and the National Guard, from 2004 to 2016.

Any person (Active, National Guard, or Reserve) who has completed at least one enlistment or other obligated military service and received an honorable discharge is eligible for Military Funeral Honors.
https://media.defense.gov/2018/Sep/18/2002041771/-1/-1/1/MFH_ELIGIBILITY.PDF

Ashli Babbitt was not convicted of any crime. She was killed on January 6, 2021, during the Capitol riot by a Capitol Police officer

The following persons are not eligible for military funeral honors:
Individuals separated from the armed forces under dishonorable conditions or those who have been barred from veteran’s benefits.
Those who have been convicted of a federal or state capital crime.
A person who is found to have committed but who has not yet been convicted of a federal or state capital crime by reason of their not being available for trial due to their death or flight to avoid prosecution.

Ashli Babbitt was engaged in criminal activity on January 6, 2021, when she participated in a riot at the U.S. Capitol.
Babbitt was part of a mob that illegally entered the U.S. Capitol building in an attempt to disrupt the certification of the 2020 presidential election results.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is in charge of providing military honors for eligible veterans and service members.

The current Secretary of Defense is Pete Hegseth.

This is on Merrick Garland's DOJ. If Babbitt was charged and/or convicted posthumously, she would not deserve a military funeral.

“bring discredit upon the Air Force” is a tremendous understatement.

U.S. military funerals are traditionally reserved for actual heroes, not insurrectionists who attacked their own country’s capitol.

Why the scheduled military funeral for Jan. 6 rioter Ashli Babbitt is indefensible - MSNBC

apple.news/ALS7elVXxR22...

(@oc88.bsky.social) 2025-08-29T20:10:30.606Z

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/scheduled-military-funeral-jan-6-rioter-ashli-babbitt-indefensible-rcna228089

It was a few months ago when Donald Trump’s Justice Department reached a settlement with the family of Ashli Babbitt, the Jan. 6 rioter who was fatally shot by a police officer during the attack on the U.S. Capitol. As part of the agreement, the Republican administration announced plans to give roughly $5 million to settle a wrongful-death lawsuit filed by Babbitt’s relatives.

While this was impossible to defend given the weakness of the case — Thomas Manger, the outgoing chief of the U.S. Capitol Police, condemned the payment in no uncertain terms — it apparently was just part of a larger effort. As my MSNBC colleague Ja’han Jones explained:

The U.S. Air Force is planning to offer an official military funeral for deceased insurrectionist Ashli Babbitt, who was shot during the attack on the U.S. Capitol, according to documents released by a conservative nonprofit.

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, a war veteran who’s now estranged from the Republican Party, said in response to the news: “While her death is absolutely tragic and I wish it hadn’t happened, the Air Force giving her honors is in itself a dishonor.”.....

But in June 2021, Trump said that he saw Babbitt as an ally who was on his “side.” A month later, he said the rioter was “innocent.” A month after that, he accused the officer who shot her of being a “murderer.” In 2023, Trump condemned the cop as a “thug” and a “coward” who deserved to be vilified, and earlier this year, he inexplicably claimed that Babbitt was “shot for no reason whatsoever.”

Two months later, Trump claimed that Babbitt “was innocently standing there” and had possibly even tried to help law enforcement by “trying to sort of hold back the crowd” when she was shot.

It was as odious a lie as the president has ever told.

Nevertheless, it’s against this backdrop that his administration isn’t just giving Babbitt’s family millions of dollars, it’s also giving Babbitt a military funeral — traditionally reserved for actual heroes, not insurrectionists who attacked their own country’s capitol.
