The federal investigation into John Bolton, President Donald Trump's former national security adviser, gained new momentum during the Biden administration after U.S. intelligence collected evidence suggesting he mishandled classified material, according to a report in The New York Times.
Citing people familiar with the matter, the Times said U.S. agencies obtained information from a foreign adversary's spy service, including emails that Bolton appeared to have sent on an unclassified system while in the Trump White House. The messages, reportedly containing sensitive material from classified documents, were allegedly sent to people close to Bolton who were helping him prepare his 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened. Newsweek has reached out to Bolton through his PAC, along with the Justice Department, via email on Wednesday night for comment.
Why It Matters
The revelations explain why FBI agents executed searches of Bolton's Maryland home and Washington office last week a dramatic escalation in an inquiry that had long been viewed as dormant.
Prosecutors sought the warrants to determine if Bolton, a vocal Trump critic, possessed evidence corroborating the foreign spy service's cache, the Times reported. While no charges are pending, the Times said the FBI searches were aimed at verifying whether Bolton still holds documents matching the intercepted material, which would bolster the case.

(578 posts)Claiming that Bidens Administration was investigating could be true, or could be a smokescreen planted by Trumps White House to justify political retribution.

(29,784 posts)one of our adversary's spy services, why can't they just say Russia, say GRU? Isn't that the new KGB?
The FBI wouldn't plant an email on Bolton's computer, would they?
What is the more serious offense, Bolton telling a friend of his what horrible shit Krasnov did, or the fact that Krasnov did horrible shit?
Maybe this should be investigated further and we should find out what awful thing Krasnov did?

(160,177 posts)And then when it came time for the Senate Trial, the GOP (who still controlled the Senate at the time), refused to call any witnesses including Bolton, who purportedly offered to testify -
John Bolton says he'll testify in Senate impeachment trial if subpoenaed
And remember, the above happened while 45 was still in office.
After the acquittal, Bolton went on his book tour starting some time in June 2020, after a court denied 45's attempt to halt the book release.
So I expect that once Biden was elected and took office in 2021, they expanded an investigation given that Bolton DID work under 45 before he was fired and allegations related to the "quid pro quo" by 45, were apparently included in the book (and they probably discovered more, once they started researching Bolton's activities under 45).

(29,784 posts)The evidence came from one of our adversary's spy service. Isn't that just like the Burisma drummed up scandal? Lev and Igor digging up dirt on Hunter and Joe?
I don't click on Newsweek, maybe the link makes a better explanation than is shown.
Bolton used his personal email while the Trump administration continues to use personal servers with encryption.

(160,177 posts)One of the things that the MAGat loons do is to obfuscate the "truth" with some non sequitur overlay. There were reasons for the Biden administration to investigate Bolton - particularly after his book purportedly (and I say that because I never read it) indicated there was a "quid pro quo" regarding Ukraine and military assistance - which is what triggered the first impeachment in fall 2019. The book was released AFTER that first impeachment (June 2020) but before Biden was sworn in, so there was time during the Biden administration from 2021 on, to follow-up on that and any other shady activities that Bolton was involved in during his short stint working for 45.
