MINNEAPOLIS The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed an active shooter allegedly opened fire at a church on the city's south side Wednesday morning.
Authorities said the shooter has since been "contained" and there's no lingering threat to the public.
An army of police and paramedics arrived at Annunciation Church, 509 W. 54th Street around 8:30 a.m., where Richfield police reported a man dressed in black and armed with a rifle was spotted on the scene. Police confirm there are approximately 20 victims, but did not share details of their status.
Multiple sources told KARE 11's Lou Raguse that the shooter is dead, and that bomb squads are working to disarm multiple improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Families of children at Annunciation School are urged to go to a reunification zone at 525 W. 54th St.

(42,745 posts)at the time this story was filed. The quotation marks around "contained" lead me to think that was the case.
Eta: The use of "gunman" tells me the story was filed before the cops knew or revealed the shooter identified as female. But then, I don't know KARE's policy on gender identity, so...

(37,356 posts)If you've spent time arguing about firearms on DU, you learn that's the term Gunners recognize as accurate, versus "Assault Rifle".
Bernardo de La Paz
(58,424 posts)You should not expect your readers to have spent time arguing firearms on DU.
Like the article explained IED, a much more common term, you could have explained MSSAR in parentheses. However the usual way is to use the acronym and then in parentheses expand it.

(50,950 posts)It usually is very easy to just type out the words if you want people to understand what you're saying.
That is the first time I've ever seen "MSSAR" and would have no idea what it means. Thanks.

I had a whole thread going on Facebook about this several years ago and we were all making up our own obscure acronyms just to make a point. It was very funny.

TYVM! GMTA, right? YTMND. I say this AAF.
AFAIC, it's a royal PITA trying decipher all of these acronyms, IMNSHO, and it's a BFD. SMDH. But TBH IANARS and YMMV, IYKWIM. JOOC, IYDMMA, R U in agreement? LMK.
FWIW, AAMOF, U R correct. DAE see it this way?

I could make out some of those, but the rest are making my head hurt.
Thank you very much! Great minds think alike, right? You're the man now, dog!. I say this as a friend.
As far as I'm concerned, it's a royal pain in the ass trying to decipher all of these acronyms, in my not so humble opinion, and it's a big f-ig deal. Shaking my damn head. But to be honest, I am not a rocket scientist and your mileage may vary, if you know what I mean. Just out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, are you in agreement? Let me know.
For what it's worth, as a matter of fact, you are correct. Does anyone else see it this way?
Talk to you later. May the force be with you!
End of message. Maybe end of thread?

(50,950 posts)When we comment online, the point is to communicate. If I have to go look up an obscure acronym, that puts limits on the communication. Sometimes I can't even find what it means; I think some people just make them up as they go whether it is to save them time or to purposely be elusive. I find it often rude and inconsiderate.
Also there are exclusive acronyms that people of certain occupations use in the workplace. Somehow they often take those home with them and annoy friends and family with their "work speak", as if everyone in the world knows what they mean. I've had jobs like that, but I knew that other people wouldn't know what I'm talking about, so I never used them outside work.
We aren't the only ones who get annoyed with them, though it might be generational!
Thanks for the conversation. Take care.

I vaguely remember a mass shooting in CA at a McDonald's (early 80s?) getting wall-to-wall coverage because it was such an aberration from our norm. The here and now seems to provide it to us a monthly normal now, rather than a bizarre oddity.

(8,082 posts)did you ever see the documentary about the UW-Madison Vietnam protests? It is stunning to look back and see how young everyone was and even high school kids taking part. Having lived through it all I, like many others, put some aspects of it all in the back corners of our minds. Years ago when I saw it it was a huge impact to realize that we were literally children and helped raise hell to the point that we did was striking to my memory and brought back the memories of how fearful, angry and determined we were. I believe it was titled "The War At Home" or something similar. It focused entirely on UW.

That was five years after the shooting at a San Diego high school by a 16-year-girl who gave the reason, "I don't like Mondays." The resulting eponymous song by Bob Geldof (then of the Boomtown Rats) propelled him to superstardom.

We're now hearing from Thomas Wyatt, Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Hennepin Healthcare.
Seven critical patients were brought in and four needed surgery, Wyatt says.
He also says the patients were aged between six and 14 years old.
He adds that he can't give any individual patient information, but at the moment they're all alive.

gunners (promise to set their families up for life, say) to mass shoot, which gives him "cause" for deploying troops into battlegrounds -- to "protect his beautiful christians ... Nice church ya got here, too bad if somethin' happened to it."
This protection racket strategy will be enacted in every battleground state over the next 14 months.
Keep christians from voting, keep the rest of the state intimidated to stay away from election polls so as to shut down a high turnout that current polls show could happen (e.g., the Iowa special election).

How about "we shouldn't be politicizing this tragedy right now"?
Or the "we have a mental health crisis in our country" but say they still plan to continue to give known dangerously mentally ill people access to guns? Plus continue to cut mental health care?

So, as their savior would do, so will I. Not because he would, but because it is the decent and correct thing to do. I suspect he would approve.
(This just stinks of 'ulterior motive', I am going to just come right out and say it. No, we don't know anything yet, but that stench is unmistakeable...)

Oh that's right. They're not quite ready to do a "rapid response." They're currently busy rapidly responding in picking up garbage and cleaning toilets in DC. Thoughts and prayers do not affect positive change. Formalized religion has never done anything for anyone except put a target on their back.

US reporter
Minnesota, where Minneapolis is located, has got relatively strong gun safety laws compared to the US overall.
It ranks 14th out of the 50 states, according to an analysis by gun safety advocacy group Everytown.
Minnesota requires background checks for buying firearms, and people need permits to carry guns in public.
The state also restricts those with violent offences, felonies, or domestic abuse on their record.
Families can ask a court to temporarily stop an at-risk individual from having guns.
Authorities havent given details on how the Minneapolis shooting suspect got the firearms, whether he had permission to own or carry them. Details like this will probably take time to come out.

A post on the church's Facebook says she retired from the school in August 2021.
