Four journalists were among at least 15 people killed by Israeli strikes on al-Nasser hospital in southern Gaza, Palestinian health officials said.
The strikes on Monday killed Hussam al-Masri, who worked for Reuters, Mariam Abu Dagga, who worked for the Associated Press, the Al Jazeera journalist Mohammed Salam, and Moaz Abu Taha from NBC. Another Reuters journalist, Hatem Khaled, was also wounded in the attack.
A video from the news agency al-Ghad TV showed civil defence workers wearing bright orange vests and journalists struck while they attempted to rescue the body of al-Masri, who was killed in an earlier strike. In the moments before their deaths, they raised their hands to shield themselves, but were quickly struck.
At least 192 Palestinian journalists have been killed since 7 October 2023, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), more than the number who died globally in the previous three years. The CPJ said in August that Israels killing of journalists in Gaza was a deliberate and systematic attempt to cover up Israels actions.

It's the second strike on the workers trying to retrieve casualties that makes this an act of sheer evil.
Death toll now at least 5 journalists, out of 20:
The Israeli military has confirmed it carried out an attack nearby, but not why the building was hit. It says its ordered an initial inquiry.
Footage shows smoke rising up after the main hospital in southern Gaza was hit. In one video, as a doctor holds up bloodied clothes to show journalists, theres another strike. Reuters confirmed that its cameraman Hussam al-Masri was killed.
...
Witnesses said the second strike took place after rescue workers and journalists rushed to the site of the first attack.

That should just about cover it.

(3,732 posts)But you're right, that common Israeli tactic of killing the would-be rescuers is SHEER evil.
When all the journalists are dead, is it still a genocide?

The August 10 attack raises the number of Al Jazeera staff journalists killed by Israel in Gaza during the war to 10, in addition to nine journalists who freelanced with the media organization, according to CPJ data.
If Israel can kill the most prominent Gazan journalist, then it can kill anyone. The world needs to see these deadly attacks on journalists inside Gaza, as well as its censorship of journalists in Israel and the West Bank, for what they are: a deliberate and systematic attempt to cover up Israels actions, said Qudah. Israel has killed more journalists in the 22 months since the start of the war than were killed worldwide in the preceding three years. Deliberately targeting journalists is a war crime under international law. This massacre must end.

Axios has a graph of the figures (interactive - I can't show it here) of journalists and media workers killed globally since 1992. 2024 was the worst ever, with about two thirds killed in this conflict.

(3,732 posts)This is at least the 5th incident of targeting a group of journalists inside or on the grounds of hospitals. There was one just a few weeks ago that killed a well-known Al-Jazeera journalist and others working for AP, Reuters etc. It's a kill two-birds with one stone type of thing. Hide war crimes from the world and also continue the devastation of hospitals. But journalists are killed everywhere, often in their homes along with their entire families. They're targeted assassinations, with no regard for loss of civilian life, something Israel is good at and has been allowed to get away with for decades - for reasons we all should know by now.
A few months old but a good overview of the pattern of killings at hospitals:
militarys pattern of killings of journalists in Gaza, which remains the deadliest place in the world
to be a journalist. In the latest attack on Al Ahli Hospital, Gaza City, in the morning on 5 June, at
least 4 journalists were killed and 3 more were injured. This is at least the third instance of
journalists apparently targeted and killed at hospitals. An attack on Nasr Medical Complex in Khan
Younis on 7 April 2005 killed 2 journalists, and an attack on Al Awda Hospital in An Nuseirat
killed 5 journalists on 26 December 2024.
UN Human Rights Office OPT is horrified that Israeli military attacks reportedly killed 18
journalists in May 2025 alone. The Office has verified the killing of 227 Palestinian journalists in
Gaza since 7 October 2023, including 197 men and 30 women. The apparent targeting of
Palestinian journalists in Gaza, combined with the denial by Israel of access of foreign journalists
to Gaza for over 18 months, except a few visits controlled by IDF, appear to indicate a deliberate
attempt by Israel to limit the flow of information to and from Gaza and prevent reporting on the
impact of its attacks and denial of humanitarian assistance. Directing attacks against protected
persons such as journalists is a violation of international humanitarian law and also constitutes a
war crime.
The attack on Al Ahli Hospital on 5 June came as the Israeli military targeted hospitals that had
barely recovered from previous rounds of hostilities. The Israeli military's conduct of hostilities
has pushed the health care system across Gaza to the verge of complete collapse. Operations in
North Gaza have put three main hospitals in the governorate out of service, destroying the sole
dialysis centre in the north. At the same time, the Israeli displacement orders and intense military
operation in Khan Younis are preventing patients from reaching two of the main hospitals in Khan
Younis - European and Al Amal Hospitals, and Israeli ground troops are advancing in the vicinity
of Nasr Medical Complex the largest hospital in the south, raising the risk of it also being of it
also being forced out of service. Al Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir al Balah was struck three times
in the morning on 4 June.
The coordinated, repeated and extensive attacks on hospitals, which are specially protected
facilities under international humanitarian law, and the deprivation of health and medicate care to
those in desperate need, further indicate a complete indifference towards civilian lives and
suffering and raise concerns of an intentional disregard by Israel of its obligation to respect and protect civilians.

Think of the IDF/Mossad pager attack. IDF propaganda was proud and defended the methodology as specific, not targeting the innocent.

Stripped, Beaten or Vanished: Israels Treatment of Gaza Detainees Raises Alarm
A U.N. office said Israels detention and treatment of detainees might amount to torture. It estimated thousands had been detained and held in horrific conditions. Some were freed wearing only diapers.
Photos and videos taken by Israeli soldiers and Israeli journalists embedded with the military have shown Palestinians with hands bound behind their backs, sometimes blindfolded and in underwear, kneeling outdoors in winter.

In a more recent NYT report, 3 prisoners spoke of hot metal rods on and in body parts. You would have to be mentally ill to surrender.
