New York Attorney General Letitia James is not backing down. Her sprawling business fraud case against President Trump took a meteoric hit when a divided appeals court Thursday threw out the roughly $500 million civil fraud penalty against him and his company despite keeping the case intact.
However, she vowed to appeal to the states highest court, even as the Justice Department has turned up the heat on her, pursuing probes scrutinizing her office and personal real estate in an escalation of Trumps vows for retribution against his foes.
James is among Trumps most prominent adversaries after winning the civil fraud case against him and his business, resulting in a finding that he altered his net worth for tax and insurance benefits a blow to his real estate mogul image. It puts New Yorks top prosecutor back on a collision course with the president.

(142 posts)What part is retribution? The allegations against James herself or the appelate courts decision to set aside the monetary damages against Trump?

That makes it easy to conflate the two.
Note also that the 5 judges that tossed the penalty pretty much agreed it was excessive and often "cruel and unusual" but apart from that they split 4 ways (3?) on the merits of the underlying case. Some agreed with the verdict, a couple said it should be tossed, and in between was in between. So they'll let a higher court deal with that.
Yes, Trump claimed a "complete" win, but in Trumpese that just means, "Hey, I'm right! Like always! Whatever the reality!"
