A little-known oyster farmer is looking to upend top Democrats plans in Maine.
Democrat Graham Platner, the 40-year-old owner of Waukeag Neck Oyster Co. and an Iraq and Afghanistan War veteran, announced Tuesday he is mounting a challenge to Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Platner has never run for office, and his campaign threatens to disrupt national Democrats efforts to recruit and unite around Gov. Janet Mills.
Im not fooled by this fake charade of Collins deliberations and moderation, he said in a campaign kickoff video. The difference between Susan Collins and Ted Cruz is at least Ted Cruz is honest about selling us out and not giving a damn.
Platner is running on several progressive tenets though he rejects the label liberal and his announcement sets up the possibility of a clash between Democratic Party factions over generational change, Israel and other issues. In an interview with POLITICO, Platner said he would not support Chuck Schumer as Senate Majority Leader if Democrats managed to take back control in the 2026 midterm elections....................

(48,357 posts)He echoed the calls for change that have roiled the party for months, saying it is time to really start moving towards building a much stronger, more robust group of young leaders across this country.
Though hes a political newcomer, Platner said he has brought onboard two progressive strategists who have experience successfully running against establishment-favored Democrats: Morris Katz, a top admaker for New York City Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, and Joe Calvello, a former senior aide to Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.).

(4,268 posts)As one comedian put it, a party cannot run an "unwrapped mummy" and hope to win. To forget that so soon after losing to Trump is unfathomable. None of the elder statesmen or stateswomen are irreplaceable, even if they happen to think so. They are clinging to careers at this point, not principles. If the national Democratic Party does not wise up, Trump will end up being unopposed save for the classic "strongly worded letter" that has done nothing to halt or even slow down Trump and his unpatriotic goon squad.
Either fully embrace progressive economic values and stand up for the working class across the board or keep losing elections with candidates who are enthralled with the centrist economic policies which have only served (among many other things) to enshrine Republican health insurance plans as healthcare in this country and which have led to the rise of the most unqualified, incompetent, useless, ill-informed, and factually illegitimate President (who wishes to have dictatorial powers) that this country has ever seen.

...
Though much of the liberal base has recently called for fresh faces, national Democrats have turned to well-known, battle-tested and older candidates in their longshot effort to flip the upper chamber in 2026. Schumer recruited former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, 72, and former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, 68, to launch Senate bids, and Democrats are hoping Mills, 77, joins them.

(3,323 posts)And here are some other thoughts.
- I thought it was was funny him calling Cruz "honest" about selling us out. foxnews-speak ain't ever honest.
- I shake my head when liberals backpedal on their liberal bona fides by mentioning their ownership/enthusiasm for guns. Conservatives never backpedal on their "conservative values" by mentioning their abortions, but it's another example of how Democrats have been "reaganized" since the 80s. (Bill Clinton's "the era of Big Government is over." Um, no, it's not.)
- I love oysters!

(8,833 posts)Upfront - Mills is a good governor. But..,
But shes 77 years old. Shes just 18 months younger than Trump. She will be part of making the Democratic Party look like the Soviet Politburo of the 1970s. (Republicans have the same problem.)
If elected she will be 78 when she takes office and have ZERO seniority.
And she will be 83 at the end of her first term.
And then she will have to decide whether she will run for a 2nd term - to be completed when she is 89 - putting Maine voters back on a hole.
Havent we learned from Reagan, Biden, Feinstein, Grassley, McConnell, Granger - and Trump - serving in your 80s is too effing old!!! Get out!! Bring in new blood!
The candidate from Maine should be in his/her 40s or 50s, able to put the work in, gain seniority, and thus be of more help to Maine, the Party - and the nation.

(68,038 posts)It's a good thing that more than one Democrat is planning to run against Collins, and I doubt it "upends" any major plans. Let the primary play out and then the Democrats can unite around a nominee.
Assuming in advance that this goes against some shadowy "national Democrats' plan" is scare mongering in an effort to make Democrats look bad.
Is that what Politico wants? For Democrats to look bad so Susan Collins wins again?
