Vermont's Republican Governor Phil Scott declined a request from the federal government to send his state's National Guard soldiers to Washington, D.C. to assist with President Donald Trump's controversial efforts to stop crime in the city.
According to Vermont Public, Scott turned down a preliminary inquiry from the Pentagon to send "a few dozen" soldiers to the capital city.
Last week, President Trump signed an executive order to take control of Washington's police department and activated hundreds of National Guard troops in an effort to combat crime and homelessness in the city something the president claimed is out of control despite statistics showing that violent crime is lower in the city compared to recent years.
Scott's chief of staff reportedly told Vermont Public that "the governor just does not support utilizing the guard for this purpose, and does not view the enforcement of domestic law as a proper use of the National Guard.

(104,704 posts)than Washington DC. Philip Bump - used to work for the Washington Post, but he's too honest for them (can't show the zoomable maps here - there's no paywall on the page, so see them there) :
But now the pretext wavers. If there really is an emergency in D.C. that necessitates the use of the National Guard and other federal agencies, that would suggest that crime in D.C. is exceptional. (It would also suggest that crime is rising, which it isnt; quite the opposite. But if you note that its falling, then you find yourself under attack for downplaying the existing crime, even when you arent. These are the traps that the pro-Trump bubble uses to keep reality at bay.) Data released by the FBI earlier this month, though, shows that a lot of other places including places in those three states had higher rates of violent crime and homicide than did D.C.
I went ahead and made some interactive maps using the FBI data. Cities shown in pink below are ones where the violent crime rate in 2024 was higher than in D.C. Zoom in if you need to.
...
The FBI reported that fully 43 cities in those three states had higher rates of violent crime in 2024 than did D.C. More than 1.2 million people live in those cities, including more than 900,000 in Ohio alone. Yet that states National Guard is being deployed to D.C. to protect the capitals 700,000-odd residents. Half a million Ohioans live in cities with higher homicide rates than D.C. Unfortunately for them, they wont get to see National Guard troops on their streets just on their TVs, standing around outside the Lincoln Memorial.
Or maybe the lesson here is that this isnt really about crime at all.

(608 posts)Vermont and New Hampshire are the only two states where the governor is elected every two years. There is no restriction for time in office in Vermont. Scott has held office since 2016 and won reelection in 2024 by largest margin since 1946. Good luck with the that Trump.

(52,683 posts)surprising to me that Scott was elected again and again, but I think that was backlash for the Democratic governor who served right before him. In the end, that guy talked a good game but was pretty much a crook. Scott is an old school Republican. You don't agree with him some of the time, but he's not batshit crazy.
