Speaker Johnson vows to fight California Democrats' 'illegal power grab'

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) slammed California Democrats proposed House map on Monday, saying hes taking measures to stop the new congressional lines from advancing.
Democrats across the nation have played politics with redistricting for decades, and this is just the latest example. Republicans who are following state and federal laws will not be lectured by people who abused the system, Johnson wrote in a statement on the social platform X.
I have instructed the NRCC to use every measure and resource possible to fight the California Democrats illegal power grab, he continued, referring to the House Republicans campaign arm. I will continue to lead efforts to defend our House Republican incumbents and grow our majority so that we can continue to deliver on our commonsense, America First agenda.
California Democrats proposed a new set of congressional lines on Friday, which aim to neutralize the gains Texas is expected to make with their new proposed House map.

(160,136 posts)The 1st session of the 120th Congress begins on Jan. 3, 2027 and because Congress has to re-vote for a new Speaker of the House each session, no one is sworn in until there IS a Speaker elected -
(snip)
Summary
Article 1, Section 2, of the Constitution sets a term of office of two years for all Members of the House. One House ends at the conclusion of each two-year Congress, and the newly elected Representatives must constitute a new House at the beginning of the next Congress. Consequently, the House must choose its Speaker and officers and adopt the chamber's rules of procedure every two years.
The Constitution mandates that Congress convene at noon on January 3, unless the preceding Congress by law designated a different day. Although no officers will have been elected when the House first convenes, officers from the previous Congress perform certain functions, such as conducting the election of the Speaker.
The House follows a well-established first-day routine. The proceedings include
a call to order by the Clerk of the House; a prayer led by the Chaplain and the Pledge of Allegiance led by the Clerk; a quorum call ordered by the Clerk; the election of the Speaker, ordered by the Clerk and conducted with the assistance of tellers; remarks by the Speaker-elect, followed by his or her swearing-in by the dean of the House; the oath of office for the newly elected and reelected Members, administered by the Speaker; adoption of the rules of the House for the new Congress; adoption of various administrative resolutions and unanimous consent agreements; and announcement of the Speaker's policies on certain floor practices.
(snip)
You might recall the 15 votes that were taken to get the dummy Charlie McCarthy elected for the 118th Congress (in Jan. 2023) and during the 4 days when that drama went on, there were no members sworn in and no "official" Congressional business could be conducted. The Clerk was forced to run the sessions each day.

(34,060 posts)Someone will file a lawsuit against what the governor in California is doing and the people of California and depending on the court it will be upheld or not and if it is it will be appealed to the Supreme Court and guess what theyll do.
Im assuming this is something that could go to court and we certainly understand by now that this Supreme Court has no intention of abiding by the law or the Constitution. Yes they will rule that Texas can do it and California cannot. They will just make up an excuse.

Democratic appointed: 16
Republican appointed: 13
But so far, unless it has to do with the VRA, the SCOTUS has still stayed out of state elections stuff and they blessed gerrymandering -
A decade of Supreme Court rulings have given states increasingly unfettered power in redistricting
When PA redistricted in 2018 due to the GOP years of gerrymandering after the 2010 Census, violating the state Constitution's requirement of "compact and contiguous", (and PA finally had a (D) governor to support legal action), the state Supreme Court (majority (D)) ruled that the map needed to be redrawn, ignored the various maps proffered, and drew their own lines.
The GOP took it to federal court and went all the way to the SCOTUS and the SCOTUS waved them away because per the Constitution, "elections are handled by the states". The same happened again here after the 2020 Census when the state Supreme Court revised the lines to take into account a lost seat, the GOP again ran it to daddy Roberts, and the case was waved away.
ETA - and after that 2018 redistricting, the PA Congressional split went from 13 (R) - 5 (D) to 9 (R) - 9 (D), where Democrats picked up 4 seats. After the 2020 redraw, it went to 9 (D) - 8 (R), where Republicans lost a seat. The 2024 election left us at 10 (R) - 7 (D). Hopefully we can get our lost seats back and pick up a couple more.

Fundraisers for politicians is not tax-exempt and charity. Which weasel Republican lawyers and SCOTUS have redefined Republicans as charitable organizations.
If so, I oppose spending brain research funds to study why Republicans are so misguided. Those monies are needed for actual patients, not politicians playing dumb for the attention.

Clearly the Texas mid-decade reapportionment is the 'beam' in Johnson's eye....
and the Texas mid-decade reapportionment, while not prohibited by any obvious 'law',
lacks any support from the U.S. Constitution....

(21,602 posts)It's an inconvenient truth, but it IS the truth. Loooking at the congressional district maps of my state, I'd be as hypocritical as Johnson to claim otherwise. (My district looks like a snake with an oversized head at each end, lol. And some of the others are much worse!) I don't love it, but that's how the game is played, by both sides, and it's not changing any time soon.
The reason Texas's plans are so outrageous is that those maps are based on census data and are therefore customarily drawn after each census, not halfway in between the last census and the next one. Of course Johnson has no problem at all with a red state doing that, but is screaming like a stuck pig about Newsom saying both sides can play at that game. That's where the hypocrisy comes in: he thinks it's fine for HIS side to change the rules in the middle of the game but for Dems to do the same thing is *GASP* heresy!
However, when it comes to drawing ongressional district maps in such a way that one party is favored over the other, neither side has squeaky clean hands, at least not in every state, and it's disingenuous to claim otherwise.

(8,510 posts)The RNCC can't do shit about it. Elections are state regulated and Republicans in states where they are minority can do as they please. They know that from the way they have operated in states they are super majority. Johnson must think the other states they rule can squeeze out some more seats. But I think they are so gerrymandering they can't. Either way there are more seats to be gotten on the Dem side. Even Cal.can figure out a way to get 9 if need be.
