Republican civil war erupts over earmarks in funding bills

Source: The Hill

The return of earmarks to the annual appropriations bills has sparked a battle among Republicans on Capitol Hill, pitting fiscal hawks against members of the Appropriations Committees and their allies.

It’s a serious battle and one that could scuttle the chances of passing appropriations bills ahead of the Sept. 30 government funding deadline.

Republican responsibility for the huge federal deficit has become a hot political issue after President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which is projected to add $3.4 trillion to the debt over the next decade, into law. Conservatives are deeply disappointed that Trump’s bill did not make deeper cuts to federal spending, and they want to make a statement with significant reductions in the annual appropriations bills for fiscal 2026.

Adding to the frustrations of fiscal hawks, those bills are already loaded with earmarks directing the Trump administration how to spend funds. Conservatives view the return of earmarks as a return to the days of pork-barrel spending and a bad look for Republicans when the party is taking fire from Democrats for exploding future deficits.

The GOP has ALWAYS dipped it's hand in the overflowing trough. There were only a tiny handful, like former Rep. & Senator Jeff Flake, who pointed out the earmarks and didn't imbibe.

CANCEL THE "TAX CUTS FOR THE BILLIONAIRES", RAISE YOUR REVENUE, then PROBLEM SOLVED.

3. Civil war is too strong a term. They squabble a bit and fall in line. No news here. Trump owns them

4. Why do they call it "Earmark" spending instead of Pork like they used to? Oh yeah, because they do it more than we do

I remember a time not to long ago when Ditch's 2 biggest complaints whenever Democrats were in power were "Pork Barrel" spending and we need massive tort reform to stop "frivolous" law suits (which was directly aimed at the environmental lobby). Well now the King of the Frivolous Lawsuit is the head of the party, and they aren't fighting over too much "Pork Barrel" spending they are fighting over who gets the most and Ditch, jellied spine and all, is telling himself "Fuck, if this dumbass could turn us into an authoritarian juggernaut we should've done this in 2003". I bet he talks to himself in his sleep about what could've been. Hell he could've become GWB's successor he dreams to himself. Pigs all of them.
