MSNBC is becoming 'My Source News Opinion World'

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

Source: The Verge

MSNBC is about to look a lot — and sound — a lot different. The cable news network will soon go by My Source News Opinion World (MS NOW) and drop its peacock logo, according to a report from Deadline.

The change comes as Comcast, which owns NBCUniversal, plans to spin off its cable business, including networks like MSNBC, CNBC, USA, Oxygen, and E!, into a new company called Versant. In a memo seen by Deadline, MSNBC president Rebecca Kutler told staffers that as part of the transition, NBCUniversal decided that MSNBC needed “a new, separate identity.”

MSNBC originally launched in 1996 as a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC News, though the tech giant sold its majority stake in the network in 2005 and ended its web partnership in 2012. The network has used the peacock logo associated with NBC for nearly three decades. Additionally, Deadline reports that CNBC will keep its name but drop the peacock logo as well.

Kutler added that the rebrand won’t affect MSNBC’s coverage. “The future of our success is not tied to remaining within the NBC family and using the peacock as part of our identity,” Kutler wrote, according to Deadline. “While our name will be changing, who we are and what we do will not.”

1. When MSNBC first came on the air, my mother got hooked on it.

She was fascinated by the "young people sitting on stools with laptops on their laps" (no table). It was supposed to show how "hip" and "techy" they were, with the dawn of the ( "commercial" ) world wide web. After awhile, she started calling them "Microwave" (for whatever reason... ). I was like - "Ma? It's MSNBC!". No dice. "Turn on "Microwave".

When Microsoft de-partnered from them, I recall some discussion about a name change but they opted against it at the time (perhaps due to the known "brand" ).

3. This new "name" is about as antithetical to any type of "smart branding" as can be.

It's like they designed it to make the outlet die.

ETA - I guess it's supposed to have an acronym of "MSNOW".

... then I was HOOKED! I think Rachel Maddow (and Lawrence of course) have raised the bar significantly for political commentary.

What's remarkable is that even when Rachel and Lawrence have the night off for whatever reason, their fill-ins are just as good. It's a sign that the research staffs and show-runners who work behind the scenes are the folks who really bring it and make these shows excellent. That's the sign of a high-quality management team and I hope they stay together after the sale of MSNBC.

and have seen a number of hosts come and go. Many of us in particular watched to see Keith Olbermann's "Countdown" show and he was one of the ones who brought in Rachel (who served as his fill-in). She had previously had a show on SiriusXM (like Ed Schultz & Cenk's "Young Turks" ).

I remember the first time Rachel came on his show. She was a terrified, tiny little girl.

Have to wonder if spin-off is to insulate larger corporate entity from extortion and lawsuits

Mainstream Wut? news. Everytime they report on breaking news, a guy pops in from the side screen yelling "Say wutt?!?"

And who came up with that full form My Source News Opinion World?? LOL. Sounds like a bad translation of a Japanese news outlet. Like "私の情報 世界のニュースと意見" should be "My Information: World News and Opinions" but someone butchers it with Engrish to My Source News Opinion World."

17. They're branding objective journalism as "opinion"
Mon Aug 18, 2025, 12:01 PM

All part of the reich-wing push to eliminate actual honest, objective reporting in favor of fascist propaganda. Any journalist who does not spout right-wing talking points is branded as "left-leaning" opinion. Liars who spout the fascist lies are called "news."

That's his answer to any question that might hint at his lies or guilt about anything.

The implication is "Of course you can't believe any of this. How dare you even ask me?" His cult has swallowed it all the way.
