U.S. President Donald Trumps trade advisor Peter Navarro on Monday called on India to stop buying Russian crude oil, accusing the Asian giant of undermining international efforts to isolate Vladimir Putins war economy.
Writing in in the Financial Times, Navarro described Indias dependence on Russian oil as opportunistic, adding that if India wants to be treated as a strategic partner of the US, it needs to start acting like one.
In effect, India acts as a global clearinghouse for Russian oil, converting embargoed crude into high-value exports while giving Moscow the dollars it needs, Navarro said in the op-ed.
His comments come shortly after trade negotiations between the U.S. and India, which had been scheduled to take place in New Delhi later this month, were reportedly called off.

(160,105 posts)India eventually started switching oil sources because Russia came under sanctions and decided to offer their crude output at heavily discounted prices in order to continue to get some revenue stream.
I had posted about that change-up back in 2022 - https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142923926

(7,148 posts)Nor are they just a patsy for the USA anymore, part of the BRICS and have a lot of trade relationships with other nations. The loss of Russian oil was also going to a bit painful to their economy and our solution of just buying our higher priced oil was not a solution.
