As attorney general, William Barr personally investigated Jeffrey Epstein's death. Now Congress has questions.

In the hours after convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein died in a Manhattan detention cell, then-U.S. Attorney General William Barr pledged to intervene personally to lead the investigation into Epstein's death. Among the first to arrive at the Metropolitan Correctional Center soon after Epstein's death in August 2019 were members of Barr's senior staff.
The visit to the federal detention center by senior members of the attorney general's staff was highly unusual, a source who was there at the time and witnessed the visit told CBS News. But so was the death in custody of such a controversial figure. One source didn't recall ever seeing members of the attorney general's senior staff investigate an inmate death in more than 20 years. Another source, involved in the investigation, said such senior visits were rare, and if they occurred, usually pertained to promoting correctional programs, not investigating inmate deaths.
Barr's involvement extended to a personal review of the approximately 11 hours of jail surveillance footage from the night of Epstein's death. He said in an interview with The Associated Press three months later that it showed no one had entered the area where Epstein was housed, and he concurred with the conclusion of the medical examiner: Epstein had died by suicide.
Last month, after the FBI made that video public, an analysis by CBS News identified inconsistencies between Barr's description of the video and what it actually showed including whether it really proves no one else entered the cell block. Now, Barr is scheduled to appear on Monday on Capitol Hill, where he will be questioned behind closed doors by members of Congress conducting a review of the Epstein matter. Sources familiar with the oversight committee's plans tell CBS News they will be asking questions about Barr's involvement in the death investigation.

Heard about this earlier this morning on the radio. Barr is supposed to testify today (behind closed doors). They will probably try to drown it our with 45's rantings against Zelenskyy and the various EU leaders.

However, it still would be great to see that partisan fuck squirm under oath.

A piece by Thom Hartmann published 4 years ago summarizes that - Bill Barr Is The Master Of Covering Up Political Scandals
I remember the J6 interview video excerpts of him while he appeared to throw 45, et al, under the bus.
He has been a "fixer" for at least 40 years.

Barr looked like he was going to throw up.

(11,921 posts)I lived through all of that. I will never forget that Christmas Eve when GHW Bush pardoned all those SOBs! I screamed for fucking days and months about that. Next came Clinton. After Reagan, GHW Bush and Clinton, I almost gave up on politics altogether.
But here I am, on DU, in 2025. I truly am beginning to wonder if I can live thru this 2nd term of djt or not.

(38,627 posts)In the early days of Chump's first term - after Jeff Sessions vacated the position - Bill Barr was a reliably loyal and subservient consigliere to Chump.
But it's really hard to serve Chump and remain loyal, especially when you see all the lies, the frauds, the political maneuverings going on behind the scene.
By the time Chump lost the election in 2020, Bill Barr was ready to call it quits. Bill even tried to resign after the election, but Chump wouldn't let him. Then Chump fired him in December of 2020, when it became obvious that Barr wasn't going along with the planned coup attempt. Also Bill was telling the press that "The election wasn't stolen..." etc.
I don't think Bill Barr has many flattering things to say about Chump these days, but I could be wrong.

(10,529 posts)He was AG at the time of Brother Jeffery's untimely demise. Barr's pervert daddy was involved in the early stages of Epstine's pedophile "career". Barr had a statement along the lines of 'history will be determined by whomever is allowed to tell it'. I remember the condescending smirk on his punchable face when he said it. A true evil anti-patriot.

(38,627 posts)... then his motive was to destroy them. If he did that ... we'll never know since it's in direct violation of several federal and state laws to destroy evidence of any kind. I believe Barr may have destroyed evidence - if he found anything that incriminated his father (not likely) or Chump (very possibly).
Of course it's all speculation and we'll never know because Barr would have no reason to reveal his guilt.
On the other hand, Barr may have buried the Epstein videos (and other evidence) somewhere deep in the vaults of Dept. of Justice ... to be discovered later after Chump is already dead or out of power. That would be a far more vindictive thing to do, and I wouldn't put it past him. Barr was pretty disgusted with Chump by December 2020 when Chump finally fired him.

Reagan could clam that he didnt remember anything because of Alzheimers and he had H.W. Bush
pardon everyone involved and walk away from the mess. In a just world people should have been held
accountable for selling weapons to the Ayatollah, hiding money in Swiss bank accounts, running
cocaine, and supporting a war in Central America on peasants who were being held down through
violence by the Samoza family. Iran Contra also showed the rise of current right wing Fox News
type of propaganda in the form of Ollie North who was a real crooked shit but the disinformation was
sold about him that in reality he was a patriotic American fighting the good fight.
Bill Barr was the reason that Trump was never held accountable for Russia too. Why should anyone
believe one word out of his mouth?

(7 posts)William Barr's father Donald Barr (known as "Mr. Barr" and intensely disliked by students) personally hired Jeffrey Epstein to teach high school students at the Dalton School in NYC in 1974. Their family connections go way back.
"But the accounts offer a window into Mr. Epsteins early adulthood, before he developed extensive private wealth that allowed him to acquire a $56 million mansion just a mile south of the Dalton School. It was there, prosecutors said this week, that Mr. Epstein and his employees paid numerous underage girls to engage in sex acts with him."
