Two Americans have died from apparent drownings in separate incidents on the same day at the same Bahamas resort, officials said on Sunday.

The drownings occurred at Celebration Key, a new $600 million private resort for guests of Carnival Cruise Line that opened in July, authorities said.

{snip}

One of the drowning victims was a passenger on the Carnival Cruise Line ship Mardi Gras and the other was a passenger aboard the Carnival Elation, according to the cruise line. Both victims had been traveling with their families, according to Carnival.

2. I'm surprised more don't drown in Blue Chz on those Chicken Wing special Carnival boats

And I'm sure, Carnival in its drive to the bottom line wisdom told them to ignore the Cat 5 hurricane 200 miles away that was generating 120ft open sea waves heading straight for that island generating heavy rip currents (aint the same kind of rip current on an Island that you get on South Beach, no sir) because more than likely fat Americans would fucking complain if they couldn't swim because they paid "good money" to be there.

Disclaimer 1:
I have been on one of these Carnival Chicken Wing ships (most disgusting thing I've ever done) and there's a reason I call them Chicken Wing specials and it's not even close to racism so don't go there. Go on one yourself and you'll find out (or save your money and your sanity and take my word for it) I've also been to that another Island they had (2nd most disgusting thing I've ever done) and Carnival will throw a Scuba tank on your back and toss you overboard with 2 hours of training (I was in the past a trained recue diver, deep water diver and cave diver). It blew my fucking mind. I presented my credentials then was asked by the guys on the boat if I'd help with any rescues, of which their were 4 and 1 of them we resuscitated all the way back to the dock when the EMT's took over!!! I shit you not!! I got very very drunk that night. Have no clue to this day if the person made it.

Disclaimer 2:
I am in no way being insensitive to the people or the families of, that had this misfortune happen upon them. But I'm also the type of person that doesn't really feel sorry for anyone who are going to travel out of their element without being prepared for what may come across wherever your destination may be. If your from Iowa and want to swim in the ocean, drive over to the Mississippi and learn what currents are all about.

Rant off. Sorry I despise that company, the way they treat (at least when I was forced to go by my wife at the time 20 years ago) their employees, their complete and total disregard for even the simplest kinds of passenger safety and for LETTING PEOPLE BREATHE COMPRESSED AIR AT DEPTH WITHOUT CREDENTIALS!!

No thanks. Too many questions, too many people jammed together and not enough psychologists and therapists to handle the nutcases looking for a cheap cruise. We're talking Americans here.

*"Chicken Wing special Carnival boats" is such a great nickname for these horrific "getaways"

These Carnival Cruises for a family members birthday celebration. Just awful. The food was gross and we were surrounded by drunk spring breakers. You couldn’t pay me to ever go on another cruise, ever. I absolutely hated it.

I'd go on a fancy one maybe in Europe, but I just don't want to clean out my savings. I might need it with the upcoming tRUMP apocalypse.

They paid for the package holiday, so no harm will come to them.

You will never be asked to participate in any activity that may be dangerous to your health.

Package holidays are meant to be fun, and you will return in the same condition you went in.

Staff surrounding them are fully trained and have their safety in mind.

etc

There have been cases of Australian tourists to Bali dying from drug overdoses and alcohol induced deaths on board the cruise ship, and doing stupid things in Bali like hiring and crashing motorbikes needing hospitalization in Bali and an emergency flight home.

Then there have been past instances of COVID running amok on cruise ships.

All of that is best avoided! And easily avoided, just stay home.

Too early to mention 'Darwin Awards'?

If the cruise ships go to places that are otherwise very hard to get to. The generic cruise - yeah - no thanks!

I’d go on a cruise if it goes to:

A lot of the Alaskan fjords that have no other means of access.
Antarctica
Svalbard
Canadian Arctic islands or Greenland or Jan Mayen
South Pacific island hopping would be cool too - the Marquesas, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Marshall Islands, Palau, Pitcairn islands, etc. Micronesia (scuba) and Fiji I would probably do outside of a cruise though.
Some of the tougher Atlantic island locations like Hough island or Tristan de Cunha. Bucket list!

My zen/nirvana travel would be to hit Bouvet Island, Kerguelen, and the Heard and McDonald Islands - those would require charters and I would need to organize with a lot of people to afford it and even get permission!

Edit: I forgot I was on one cruise. I went up the Nile stopping all along the way at the many archaeological sites in Egypt ending at Aswan. That was cool. Some of the onboard activities were a bit cheesy, but not too bad. Most people there were primarily interested in the incredible sites to see, so that was more acceptable.

12. Sad coincidence

Those two ships together have a capacity of over 8,500 people. The fact that two elderly people died the same day is just a sad coincidence. Hundreds of people die each year on cruise ships - the majority from natural causes, such as heart attacks or strokes, especially given the older demographic of many cruisers.

While you couldn't pay me enough to cruise on Carnival, I do enjoy cruises, and if a Carnival cruise is all someone has experienced, I could understand why there would never be another.

I have been on many cruise lines and seen many destinations thanks to cruise ships. Picking the right cruise line and ship can make or break the entire concept of a cruise.

Admittedly this cartoon isn't REALLY about modern cruise passengers but still ...
