Government papers found in an Alaskan hotel reveal new details of Trump-Putin summit
Source: npr
August 16, 20256:00 AM ET Papers with U.S. State Department markings, found Friday morning in the business center of an Alaskan hotel,.......................
At around 9 a.m. on Friday, three guests at Hotel Captain Cook, a four-star hotel located 20 minutes from the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage where leaders from the U.S. and Russia convened, found the documents left behind in one of the hotel's public printers. NPR reviewed photos of the documents taken by one of the guests, who NPR agreed not to identify because the guest said they feared retaliation.
................
During the summit Friday, lunch was apparently cancelled. But .................
Jon Michaels, a professor of law at UCLA who lectures about national security, said that the documents found in the printer of the Alaskan hotel reveal a lapse in professional judgement in preparation for a high-stakes meeting.
"It strikes me as further evidence of the sloppiness and the incompetence of the administration," said Michaels. "You just don't leave things in printers. It's that simple."...................

(394 posts)It was Juan Gaetano, from Spain, who was the first European to discover Hawaii, in 1552. He named them
Isles de Mesa, or the Table Islands. Even he may not have been the first. Another Spaniard, Ruy Lopez de Villalobos is rumored to have discovered Hawaii in 1542, but has not been confirmed. By the time of Cook's arrival, there was already evidence of Spanish language spoken, and traces of Spanish culture.

But in the end, when it comes time to write the script for the movie it will be events like this one that will make it past the cutting floor and we'll end up with a comedy. (11,127 posts)Most modern printers have a memory module, often a hard drive of some kind, that stores the last several print jobs.
Anyone that knows what they are doing can print out the last several print jobs. Might be worth the look because you know that it's unlikely they only printed one thing.

(29,343 posts)A number of years ago, Ricoh (office supply company) was selling repurposed printers and it turned out everything anyone had ever printed on them was stored in its memory. Everything it prints is essentially scanned first.

(2,853 posts)Ive also dealt with classification issues on submarines
I have never heard of a copier with a hard drive. Not ruling out the possibility of there being one in all the world of electronics, but its unlikely. It would be an added cost and additional parts for no good reason.
However , there is a security issue with older copiers. Copiers used to use cylinders coated with selenium (a light reactive metal) to transfer the image from the original to the copier paper. Images of past copies could be lifted from this selenium drum. Therefore the classified copier on board (used mostly by the nuclear trained personnel) had special procedures. One was that when a drum had to be replaced, the old drum was handled as having classified data. Not sure what specifically that entailed; I just changed the drum and handed it off to the radio guys.
Nowadays Im pretty sure that all copiers are digital, and any copy scanned is just ones and zeroes in a memory chip.
Live and learn; I decided to do research after writing the above. It turns out Im 💯 wrong. Many modern copiers actually do have hard drives.
Ready, fire, aim!
My apologies.
All that being said, our government did run a scam on a Russian office (embassy?) back in the 50s or 60s. They managed to insert a film camera into the copier that handled classified information. It took a picture of everything that got copied. Then, when they suspected the film had run out, they sent a maintenance technician back for maintenance and retrieved the film.
LisaM
(29,343 posts)I only knew that because I happened to read a news story many years ago about how copiers needed to be scrubbed before they were sold or leased to someone else. I work at law firms so I took it seriously.
