California Democrats release map ahead of redistricting in response to Texas

California Democrats on Friday released their redistricting proposal, aiming to produce up to five additional Democratic seats in the US House in response to Texas Republicans' mid-decade redrawing of lines at the behest of President Donald Trump.

The release comes ahead of the California legislature meeting Monday, with final passage possible later next week. Unlike in Texas, where the GOP can pass new US House maps as soon as enough Democrats return from a nearly two-week absence denying them quorum, Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Democrats will need voters to approve new maps in a November referendum.

The extraordinary battle between the nation's two most populous states plays out as Trump has pushed Republican-led states to redraw their lines ahead of next year's midterms. That's led to outraged Democrats in blue states seeking to retaliate.

"Trump sparked this national crisis when he called Texas to rig the election. California is fighting back," California Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas said in a statement. "Democrats are empowering voters to protect working families and our democracy -- with the most transparent process in the nation. Voters will see the maps and have the final say. The stakes couldn't be higher, but I'm confident we'll defeat this assault on our democracy and end Trump's attacks on California."

I noticed the media has spent a lot of time covering the GOP whining about Democrats (WAIT A MINUTE!!1!!11! NOT FAIR!1!!!11!!!!) doing the same thing that Texas is doing (but in the former case - putting it to the voters to decide). There's zero pushback on the ridiculousness of what Texas is doing. The embrace of autocracy by the media is a sign of true sickness.

Four districts held by Republicans may flip from “safe Republican” to “safe Democratic” or “lean Democratic” based on the chart’s ratings under the new lines: California’s 1st, 3rd and 41st districts, represented by GOP Reps. Doug LaMalfa, Kevin Kiley and Ken Calvert, shift to “safe Democratic”, while the 48th district, held by Darrell Issa, shifts to “lean Democratic.”

California’s 13th District in the San Joaquin Valley, which Democratic Rep. Adam Gray flipped in a razor-thin race against former Rep. John Duarte in 2024, will be modified from “lean Republican” to “safe Democratic.”

The map could add more Democratic voters to the 22nd District represented by GOP Rep. David Valadao, which includes parts of Bakersfield and stretches north, but it’s unclear whether the changes could flip the battleground district to unseat him.

Calvert’s district would see the biggest change. The current 41st District would be divided up between neighboring districts, and Democrats would create a new one in Los Angeles County.

I've been holding off forever on pursuing my deceased father's bronze star that was never awarded to him after World War II. I have the paperwork that states he is eligible and is supposed to receive one. He never pursued it. I want to get it for him, even if it's posthumously.

But I'd have to go to a-hole Issa to get it, and I refuse to do that.

Go, Governor Newsom!

help him cheat, because he knows that what he and Musk have done to this country has angered too many people including his own base! He KNOWS that he will lose the House next year.

This ridiculous giving Abbott and 45 a pass for what they are doing (which the media apparently thinks is "okay" ), that then triggers some push back.. and then complaining about the ones "pushing back" while they are under assault, is proof of the media complicity in the increasing imposition of fascism.

They want us to "obey" and capitulate in advance (like they did).

In IL and there are 11 (D)s & 3 (R)s. In NY, there are currently 19 (D)s and 7(R)s.

For other blue states - in NJ, there are 9 (D)s & 3 (R)s, in WA, there are 8 (D)s & 2 (R)s, in MD, there 7 (D)s & 1 (R), in OR, there are 5 (D)s & 1 (R), and CO has a split of 4 (D)s & 4 (R)s.

For other blue states - ALL 9 of MA's Reps. are (D)s as are ALL 5 of CT's, ALL 3 of NM's, and BOTH of RI's, ME's, and HI's. DE's at-large is a (D).

NH's are both (D)s but like VT, whose at-large is a (D), the governors are (R)s.

The only other bigger states with a (semi-) motherlode of Reps. are those that are purple with either a (D) governor & (R) (or split) legislature or a (R) governor and a (D) (or split) legislature. E.g., PA, VA, AZ, MI, MN, NC & WI.

A thousand thanks for all your immense work!

I think the change in the state Constitution is being drafted with a "trigger" to deploy this should TX be successful with their redistricting. But other states should step up of they can.

(ETA - the revised map takes it down to only 4 (R)s out of a total of 52 seats)

It's why they keep calling them "red states" - they either smashed Democrats in the blue cities into a minuscule few districts or completely divided the cities up and included the "pieces" in different red districts to dilute the vote using extreme gerrymandering, and called it a day. TN did that with cities like Nashville IIRC and AL had done that (although they were forced multiple times to change that).

It would be terrific to have him gone. He’s a rich rice farmer who gets massive amounts of farm subsidies but still votes to cut Medicaid from the poor in his district. He’s also super MAGA and an election denier.

We have a mountain cabin in his district and I follow him on Facebook. He’s a real piece of work.
