Trump's controversial $250 visa fee could cost the US economy $11 billion as tourists stay away, research finds

Source: The Independent

Friday 15 August 2025 23:29 BST

Research suggests President Donald Trump’s new $250 “visa integrity fee” could cost the United States $11 billion — a much larger figure than the Congressional Budget Office previously estimated, according to a report.

The fee, packed in Trump’s so-called “Big, Beautiful Bill” that he signed into law last month, applies to all visitors traveling to the U.S. on a non-immigrant visa. The fee doesn’t apply to countries on the Visa Waiver Program, which includes most Western European nations and some Asian countries.

By 2034, the “visa integrity fee” would bring in more than $27 billion, the Congressional Budget Office estimated. Said differently, the office is predicting the U.S. will rake in $2.7 billion from 11 million foreign travelers paying the fee each year.

While the language of the law makes the fee sound like a win for the U.S. economy, it may actually become a major loss, as the cost could deter visitors. That loss could be as high as roughly $3.6 billion per year, or $11 billion in three years, according to a Tourism Economics analysis seen by Forbes.

Things will have to get worse, much worse, before they get better. I'm sorry that innocent people will suffer, but it's my hope that the ones who supported Trump (directly) AND the ones who opposed Harris (ie: "uncommitted" and "leave it blank" plus the third party voters) will suffer greatly and learn an important lesson.

if they don't manage to get it back; or, if they do (and, given the attitude of the current regime, they'd find some reason for not giving it back in most cases), then the US has had to do a lot of admin work without getting any money for it.

Since many visas are valid for several years, the U.S. Congressional Budget Office said it expects “a small number of people would seek reimbursement.”

Moreover, “CBO expects that the Department of State would need several years to implement a process for providing reimbursements. On that basis, CBO estimates that enacting the provision would increase revenues and decrease the deficit by $28.9 billion over the 2025‑2034 period.”

Brown said he is advising clients to treat the fee as nonrefundable.

“If you get it back, great. But it is usually difficult to get money back from the government,” he said. “I would rather them view it as a ‘bonus’ if they get the refund.”

Plus, I would think that Trump would put thousands and thousands of Military in there, and declare Martial Law, and conveniently leave them there after the Olympics.............

The citizens of the U.S. and the entire world have seen what serious damage Trump and his CABAL have managed to do in these first months, think about all Trump, the Republican Party, Steven Miller and 2025 will inflict upon the U.S. AND the world, in another year...........

It goes to the Trump Govt, not the economy if he chooses to squander it on tax breaks for the wealthy / corporations, or grift off it himself. The $11 billion loss comes directly from OUR economy in direct business/job losses (which will not be offset by TSF from the 'visa integrity fee' unless you might be a wealthy supporter, corporation, or of course leopards ate my face farmer then you might get a bailout.). It's all just smoke and mirrors with this shit.

To keep down the number of visitors to their victim country. It allows for reducing the number of new ideas that influence the unwilling victims.

It is specifically designed to discourage tourism.

Also, wannabe kings usually build up a slush fund for themselves to use for wars, building castles or buying influence. Just look at the reserves Putin forces on Russia when so many Russians live in poverty and their infrastructure is dirt roads and crumbling buildings (except in a few designated cities and their castles).

He's already caused a downturn in Las Vegas with his threats on foreigners who don't look like Nazis. What person wants to deal with that and pay $250 extra to pedo Trump as homage? There are not enough Nazis and Clans men to support Trump's failing economy.

Visitors to other countries pay a $25 visa fee. $250 says..."NO THANK YOU" to coming to the US.

We paid a $25 fee in 2018 to stay in Australia for up to 42 days. . A small fee is reasonable. But 10 times that? TACO Don will surely destroy the US economy with this scam. NO ONE will want to come here to visit, let alone compete in any sports competition.

Who would be exempt? Diplomats and their families? The decrease in the number of Foreign students will be felt as well. International workers?

The US under the TACO Don regime is on the fast track to becoming a "Shit hole" country.

If it has been finalized... is around $25, for 2 years. Canada and England have similar to 2 years also.
This is, in theory, to help with the new security check stuff. You get cleared in advance before you arrive.

Right now If I want to go to England, from Germany where I live I have to pay the new fee.

No tax on nothing is nothing. Las Vegas workers who make their income on tips for example. Just think of it this way, you are also going to be in a lower tax bracket for your income. Wow, MAGA, paying nothing on tips and in a lower income bracket. Yeah, yeah, making less money is because of Biden or Hillary.
