Trump Reportedly Offering Putin Natural Resources Off Alaska Sparks Fury

A report that President Donald Trump is preparing to offer Russian President Vladimir Putin economic incentives to encourage him to end the war in Ukraineincluding opening up access to natural resources off Alaska's coasthas sparked anger online. The Daily Telegraph reported that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is exploring the economic trade-offs the U.S. can make with Russia in order to facilitate a ceasefire and peace agreement.
These include giving Putin access to the rare earth minerals in the Ukrainian territories Moscow partially occupies, as well as opportunities to tap into the natural resources in the Bering Strait between Alaska and Russia's eastern coast.
There has been no confirmation that such a proposal is on the table, and Newsweek has contacted the White House and the office of Alaska's governor for comment. The Telegraph cited a White House statement that it did not comment "on deliberative conversations that may or may not be happening."
But social media users have responded with anger at the prospect of opening up Alaska's natural resources to Russian interests, including Trump critic and former GOP representative Adam Kinzinger who posted on X: "Let's see republicans defend this."

And the Supreme Court has unqualified judges on it appointed by Trump who have made the highest courts just another department of Trumps attending to him and whatever he wants.
I have no faith in future elections since I know in my heart they cheated and will again.

(77,763 posts)This isn't foreign policy; it's a geopolitical fire sale. The admin is putting American strategic assets on the clearance rack, hoping a quick photo-op with a dictator is worth the price. A truly bizarre business model.
The "deal" is a catalog of concessions. The admin is reportedly offering Putin access to the Bering Strait's oil reserves AND legitimizing his conquest by granting rights to minerals in occupied Ukrainethe same minerals the U.S. secured via a deal with Kyiv just this past April.
This is transactional diplomacy in action: American assets become bargaining chips, and conquest is rewarded with a contract.

(13,268 posts)It looks like TACO is going to do that, one piece at a time. The fallacy that the sea (and hence the land below) is currently shared by the two countries is being floated as a reason to justify letting Russia take our oil and gas resources.
There is a hard boundary line between the U.S. and Russia. That's why fighter aircraft are launched whenever any Russian aircraft crosses -- or even approaches -- that boundary.
Isn't giving part of the U.S. to our enemy an impeachable offense? If not, what is?
Let's see the Repukes defend this move.
It wouldn't surprise me if Russian military aircraft will "escort" Putin's aircraft ("Russki One" ) all the way to Elmendorf AFB.
Felon47 would give Putin the entire U.S. if it got him the Nobel Peace Prize.

(21 posts)Trump has been using everything he does as president to enrich himself. Obviously he is soliciting a bribe to himself and/or his businesses in exchange for the Alaska deal as well as Ukraine's resources. Must be selling a lot of Trump crypto to Russians. Write/call your congress critters and complain like hell about this,

(8,710 posts)The US currently has substantial untapped deposits, e.g. lithium in and around the Salton Sea in California.
What they both lack are processing facilities for what are very dirty extraction and refining processes, which China has. ("Rare earths" aren't particularly rare.)
My understanding was that Trump was going to offer Putin access to deposits in the east Ukrainian lands Russia's partially occupied, along with assistance in extracting and processing them, which would deserve a Nobel Prize for chutzpah.
