Donald Trump is looking to relax environmental rules for commercial spaceship companies. In an executive order titled enabling competition in the commercial space industry that he signed on Wednesday, he said its imperative to national security that the private rocket-ship industry increase launches substantially by 2030.
That would mean, according to the executive order, that those companies may be able to forgo the environmental reviews that are required under the National Environmental Policy Act (Nepa). Private space companies are required to get launch permits from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). And, as part of that process, companies are subject to review under the National Environmental Policy Act.
Sean Duffy, the US secretary of transportation, which oversees the FAA, called Trumps executive order visionary. The FAA has faced criticism from space companies for taking too long to review launch permits while environmental groups have lambasted the agency for not using Nepa reviews to require more protections at launch sites.
These environmental reviews are required because rocket launches and landings can be massively disruptive to local towns and residents, along with the natural surroundings. Exhaust, smoke plumes and sonic booms created at launch can injure and kill endangered species, and detritus from exploded rocket parts returning to Earth can harm fish and marine animals with hazardous material spills, fuel slicks and falling objects.

(4,268 posts)Musk's "Twitter" whinings don't count as a legitimate criticism of the review process. Isn't Musk close to at least half a decade behind schedule now in terms of what he has promised to deliver versus what he and SpaceX have actually delivered (at great cost to the US taxpayer)? That problem was not caused by slow reviewing, but likely by his over-salesmanship, by bad management, or by an unrealistic prognostication of certain companies' abilities.
FAA procedures should be followed so that Musk isn't allowed to pollute the world's airspace frequently with fragments of his failed and exploded rockets.

(6,557 posts)Trump revokes Biden-era order on competition.. but here trump wants to "promote" competition? I'm so confused!!!! (LOL)
No LOL, tho... is there any more ways they can kill the once beautiful Gulf of Mexico? Do they have to kill EVERYTHING in their damned chase for money? One thing we MUST do when we gain back our country is to set rules and regulations and keep the reins tight on corporations and big money of any kind... light, dark, and anything in between. If the rich don't like it, I'm very much of the view they can find someplace else that will accommodate their every whim. Frankly, I'm damned tired of their whining while they steal food and housing and livable space from ordinary people. Not to mention the harm they've done to the wildlife, both terrestrial and sealife.
