Newsom: California will redraw maps after 'missed' Trump deadline

Source: The Hill

08/13/25 8:35 AM ET

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said Tuesday that his state would redraw its House maps after President Trump failed to respond to a letter the governor sent him urging Trump to have red states call off redistricting efforts.

“DONALD ‘TACO’ TRUMP, AS MANY CALL HIM, ‘MISSED’ THE DEADLINE!!! CALIFORNIA WILL NOW DRAW NEW, MORE ‘BEAUTIFUL MAPS,’ THEY WILL BE HISTORIC AS THEY WILL END THE TRUMP PRESIDENCY (DEMS TAKE BACK THE HOUSE!),” Newsom wrote in a statement on the social platform X put out through his press office, meant to mock how Trump writes his posts on Truth Social.

“BIG PRESS CONFERENCE THIS WEEK WITH POWERFUL DEMS AND GAVIN NEWSOM — YOUR FAVORITE GOVERNOR — THAT WILL BE DEVASTATING FOR ‘MAGA.’ THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER! — GN,” he added.

Newsom penned a letter to Trump on Monday pressing the president to have Texas and other red states stop their mid-decade redistricting efforts, saying “you are playing with fire, risking the destabilization of our democracy, while knowing that California can neutralize any gains you hope to make.”

It had been done by an independent commission before the SCOTUS blessed gerrymandering. Now they and other state Democrats have no choice but to play by the new rule. Bring it on!

if Texas makes their gerrymandering legal then California's gerrymandering is also legal. And if CA's gets challenged, then TX's will, also.

as much as Trump loathes California and New York, they should both exit the United States, become their own countries.

Or if Trump moves towards Canada becoming the 51st State, Washington, Oregon, California, and New York should become part of Canada......

I would also include Alaska, but any day Trump is going to give Alaska back to Putin/Russia, claiming the original sale to the U.S. was illegal in some far fetched way........

It's entirely possible for one of them to be legal and the other to not be legal.

For the obviously relevant example... TX has redistricted mid-cycle before and their courts upheld it. Their legislature and governor have the power to draw the lines. CA's constitution does not allow the state legislature to draw the lines... so they hope to get the voters to change the state's constitution. The voters might reject that... or the state courts might rule the change to not be allowable (they've rejected proposed amendments in the past)... or they might rule that the process was not followed correctly. And none of that would impact TX's action.

Immediately after the election, there was literally russians kicked out, after you could visibly see they were burning documents in our country. The Obama administration played nice, and sent them back to Russia.

That was the first egregious error. When you have Brenna out there telling us that this is a 911 size emergency, and they just sent them home? Why werent these russian spies not prosecuted for OBVIOUSLY ILLEGALLY HELPING TRUMP? Yes, I am yelling this. I dont know if half the people on this forum even remember it, because guess what? There was no rachael maddow, there was nobody talking RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA. There were a few people here being called conspiracy theorists, and to stop it. Other democrats, again, were telling us what we should and should not fight for, or believe in.

They had months left to blow this entire thing open. They didnt do a fucking thing, and it cost us our freedom

the more seats they get in the House.

CA can redraw the district lines to turn current red districts blue, which would increase D seats in the House.

California already has a higher percentage of blue seats than the red ones in TX (even after they redraw to pick up five).

Moreover, California is expected to lose three seats in the next cycle while Texas picks up as many as four.

CA could go "extreme" and attempt to remove every (R) seat meaning 9 more.

TX might have a harder time going "extreme" to remove all 12 (D) seats -

Regardless of the state's population... they have more to work with than CA's nine red seats and 17 blue districts won with less than 60% of the vote (seven of which were competitive).

where many of the GOP votes were Latino and (non-white) Latinos are now the majority population in the state. I.e., there is some FAFO that is starting to set in.

July 31, 2025
Republican Power Grab in Texas Depends on Iffy Latino Gains

(snip)

As these numbers show, Trump outperformed his party significantly in 2024, and a lot of that was attributable to his success among Latino voters in the Lone Star State. To a considerable extent, the impact of the new Texas map depends on whether Republicans can both consolidate that onetime Latino support and transfer it to congressional candidates when Trump is not on the ballot. That could be tricky, and could even backfire, as Politico reports:

Across counties that were at least 75 percent Hispanic, Trump ran 8.6 points ahead of Sen. Ted Cruz, indicating Latino voters were more likely to cast their ballots for both Cruz’s Democratic rival, Colin Allred, and Trump.

If Latino voters show similar openness to downballot Democrats candidates without Trump on the ballot next year, it could spell trouble for Republicans. The redrawn 28th and 34th districts, which are 90 percent and 77 percent Latino respectively, backed Trump by more than 10 points last year. But Allred came within 0.2 points in the 28th and 2 points in the 34th. (In his 2022 gubernatorial bid, Beto O’Rourke would have won the 28th and lost the 34th by 1 point.)

The new 35th district, which includes part of Bexar County along with solidly-Republican areas east of San Antonio, is 53 percent Latino and supported Trump by 10 points and Cruz by just under 4 points.

(snip)

And don't forget that this is not just a CA thing. Because the GOP had already gerrymandered the hell out of their states and Democrats pushed for and enacted "fair maps", there are other "blue" states that can undo their "fair maps".

A number of seats that Democrats lost in 2022 were due to "fair maps" (notably in NY).
