Who gets Kennedy Center Honors under Trump? George Strait, Kiss, Michael Crawford being eyed.

The arts complex’s marquee awards ceremony may see significant changes as Trump continues to overhaul the institution he took over in February.

Of the more than 2,000 events that take place each year at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, one looms above all the others: the Kennedy Center Honors. One of the center’s largest fundraisers, the annual black-tie gala and television broadcast is a magnet for A-listers and prominent Washingtonians. Earning the honors can be a major career highlight.

{snip}

The Kennedy Center has seriously considered several names to receive this year’s honors, including country music legend George Strait, glam-metal icons Kiss and the English actor Michael Crawford, according to several current and former employees with knowledge of the center’s plans who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them publicly.

The picks have to agree to receive the prize, and it was unclear which, if any, of these names had made the final list. But on Tuesday the Kennedy Center offered some clues in an Instagram caption: “a country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House….” Trump plans to announce the picks at the Kennedy Center on Wednesday.

The list of potential honorees wouldn’t feel out of place at many honors, which have spotlighted luminaries across artistic disciplines. Strait, for example, would not be the first country star to receive the honors, nor Kiss the first ’70s rock band. At the same time, Trump is known to be a fan of the musical “The Phantom of Opera,” the title role of which was originated by Crawford.

It has reported that Trump thought about honoring some dead people.

At a minimum, he would probably pick Trump supporters.

In the past, Mel Brooks declined the honor under George W Bush but not Obama.
Also, Norman Lear accepted it but declined the White House ceremony with the Trumps in 2017.

He might pick some dead artists because they cannot boycott.

[excerptThe first test came in late March, a little more than a month after Trump’s takeover, when Conan O’Brien received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor — after being offered it by the previous leadership. During his speech, O’Brien specifically thanked “the people who invited me here,” naming former chairman David Rubenstein and former president Deborah Rutter, both of whom were ousted in February.

The show itself proceeded as usual, though nearly every performer made jabs at the center’s new leadership. Will Ferrell joked, “I’m supposed to be shutting down the Department of Education.” John Mulaney said the Kennedy Center would be renamed the “Roy Cohn Pavilion of Big Strong Men who Love ‘Cats.’” Sarah Silverman addressed O’Brien: “I really miss the days when you were America’s only orange a--hole.”

You may have come across some of those online country-western music sites, set up to piss and moan about the current state of the C-W industry. Invariably, their heroes are old-timers like George Strait, Buck Owens and George Jones, and their villains are the racial minorities whose country tunes have gained favor in recent years. They frame it as a longing for older, more traditional country music, but it's clear what they really miss is an era when only white guys (and a few white gals) were popular. I've come across (and deleted) at least a dozen such sites in recent months.

Ray Charles’s Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music came out in the spring of 1962. Two songs on the album went to the upper reaches of the country and western charts.

And good morning.

And I take no particular pleasure in trashing the current status of country-western music. I'm a fan of Strait, Owens and Jones, and I don't think today's C-W music is anywhere close to how good it used to be. I put the blame on those who deserve it, however: a bunch of bearded white-guy "singers" whose combined talents equal maybe 1/10th the craft of Beyonce's country tunes.

No doubt he is a Republican, but he's stayed pretty quiet as far as I know. This may be interesting.

There are rumors that either he is ill or that Norma is ill.

The current focal point in Texas with him is that he held the concert that raised all the money for the Kerrville flood victims. Strait insisted that the proceeds go directly to the families and not through some organization. But it was Greg Abbott who actually handed out the checks. Some have criticized Strait for allowing that to happen.

We'll see...

Can't remember where I saw it, but someone took and posted a screenshot of Kevin calling out the double story on the Epstein files on X. He asked after Bondi said there were files, then she said there were no files, which was the truth? So apparently he can still spot a contradiction aka a lie.

I wonder if that means he will be X -communicated and off Trump's Kennedy Center Honors dream nominees list?

The president found time to lead the Kennedy Center, scrutinize honorees, agree to host its awards ceremony and approve an honor for one of his pals.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/trump-kennedy-center-honors-host-ceremony-stallone-rcna224819

But let’s not forget about cultural institutions, too. NBC News reported:

President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that he would host this year’s Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, his latest move to revamp the Washington, D.C., cultural institution in his image. ‘It’s going to be a big evening. I’ve been asked to host,’ he said Wednesday as he was announcing this year’s Kennedy Center honorees.

.....The president also suggested that he’s inclined to use his role as chair to give himself a Kennedy Center Honor.

Trump: “I said, to hell with it. I'll become chairman. I'll give myself an honor…Next year, we'll honor Trump.”

The Bulwark (@thebulwark.com) 2025-08-13T16:36:07.864Z

But while it was unclear whether this was intended to be funny, just as notable was the way in which Trump talked about his role at the cultural institution. To hear the Republican tell it, he has maintained a hands-on role, personally rejecting prospective Kennedy Center honorees whom he considered “wokesters.”

Trump says that all of the choices for Kennedy honorees "came through me" and adds that he turned down "some wokesters"

Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-08-13T16:16:51.144Z

.....So to review, the sitting American president, who presumably has a day job that keeps him rather busy, has found time to lead the Kennedy Center, personally scrutinize prospective honorees, agree to host the center’s upcoming awards ceremony and approve an honor for one of his pals.

“We took over the Kennedy Center,” Trump boasted in February. Evidently, that was true.

At the Kennedy Center, Trump Puts His Pop Culture Obsession on Display

President Trump held forth about the nature of show business and his own tortured relationship with celebrity.

Whatever else he is or has become, Donald J. Trump is at heart a pop culture obsessive. A fame junkie of the highest order. Us Weekly in human form.

That piece of him did not just fade away because he became the leader of a populist political movement and a two-time president. It’s all still wound up in there, as was evidenced by so much of what he said on Wednesday.

“Since 1978, the Kennedy Center honors have been among the most prestigious awards in the performing arts,” he said before a small group of top aides, Kennedy Center employees and a bank of television cameras. “I wanted one. I was never able to get one. It’s true, actually, I would have taken it if they would’ve called me. I waited and waited and waited, and I said to hell with it, I’ll become chairman, and I’ll give myself an honor. Next year we’ll honor Trump, OK?”

That last part was said like a joke, but really, who can be sure? Now that Mr. Trump is empowered as never before, he is scratching all sorts of long-held itches. He wants a military parade on his birthday? He throws one. He wants a Mar-a-Lago-style patio off the Oval Office? He paves over the Rose Garden and builds one. He’s sick and tired of being a pariah in the liberal showbusinessland whence he came? He takes over the Kennedy Center and decides to host an awards ceremony himself.
