Trump readies federal moves on D.C. crime, takes over D.C. police
Source: Washington Post

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he would place the D.C. D.C. police under direct federal control and deploy the National Guard to the streets of Washington to fight crime and clear the city of its homeless population, an extraordinary flex of federal power that could expose residents of the nations capital to unpredictable encounters with a domestically-deployed military force.
The decision to deploy troops comes as the president has been slamming Americas cities as places where crime is out of control, despite two years of declines that have brought homicide levels in many major cities to their lowest levels in decades.
The administration has already mobilized FBI agents in recent days in overnight shifts to help local law enforcement prevent carjackings and violent crime in the city, officials said. Because the District of Columbia is not a state, the federal government has unusually sweeping powers to intervene over the objections of its residents and leaders, giving the president an opportunity to use it as a laboratory for a militarized approach to urban crime-fighting.
Trump has portrayed crime in the nations capital as spiraling upward. D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser repeatedly has noted that violent crime has declined for the last two years after a sharp post-pandemic spike in 2023.

(160,558 posts)and the closest it got - at least for finally getting a "real" voting Representative. (versus a "Delegate" ), was when Orrin Hatch proposed adding another Rep. in Utah along with a D.C. one (for a total of 437 Reps vs 435 in the House) in exchange for his vote and that legislation actually passed the Senate but in the House, didn't get any further due to the NRA goons pushing for Amendments to repeal D.C.'s gun regulations. It ended up on indefinite hold.

(6,614 posts)won't fight against takeover, what hope is there? I guess maybe get the entire city out into the streets, protesting... but it would have to be every man, woman, and child who is not a police/gov't rep worker/ICE worker, etc. Only huge assed numbers are going to make a difference. If he sees the people in HIS dictatorship marching against him like the people in other countries have done against their autocrats, he might have a damned heart attack (at last!)

(9,062 posts)So one of the main felons involved in the theft of all Americans' private data is a hero because he intervened in a carjacking by teenagers...and that's why we need martial law. This is just the latest chapter in the history of flimsy pretexts. Wonder what the excuse will be to selectively cancel or delay elections in 2026. Please raise your hand if you don't see that coming.

(1,223 posts)My family was the only white family for a couple of blocks in any direction, and I welcomed martial law at that time because buildings were being looted and burned, including a shopping center two blocks from where we lived. I hadn't felt so safe in three or four years as when there was a National Guardsman stationed down at the end of the block. The rioting was the last straw and we moved to suburban Maryland four months later.
But the current situation is in NO WAY like the one in 1968 and the President ordering martial law in 1968 was not a madman*. Military chiefs need to say "NO" now and refuse to order National Guard troops or Federal troops into D. C.
*Yes, he was an asshole, but not a madman.

https://www.notus.org/trump-white-house/trump-congress-dc-police-home-rule
Per federal law, the president can federalize the metropolitan police for 48 hours on his own. To extend that to a maximum of 30 days, the president needs to notify the congressional committees with jurisdiction over Washington, D.C. Anything longer than 30 days has to be authorized by Congress......
The White House has 48 hours from the moment it officially declares control of the D.C. police to notify the four members offices. If it fails to do so within that time frame, federal law prohibits the president from keeping control of the department for more than two days.
The politics get more complicated the longer Trump wants to control Washington police. A joint resolution to authorize the federalization of the D.C. police force beyond 30 days would require two-thirds of both chambers to pass, and its highly unlikely that Democrats would support it.

So now what? Are you saying he's in control of DC police until Congress reconvenes?
If so, how are the constitutional rights of the homeless protected?
It's highly doubtful that even if there's a filing done on behalf of homeless plaintiffs, that it would stop the felon.
There's no help coming for the most vulnerable in this country.
