FBI granted request to 'locate' fleeing Texas House Democrats, Sen. Cornyn says
Source: ABC News
Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said on Thursday that FBI Director Kash Patel has granted his request for the federal government to assist with locating Texas House Democrats who fled the state in protest of GOP-led redistricting efforts.
Cornyn's letter requesting federal help with locating and investigating the state legislators was sent on Tuesday.
"I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for the federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable for fleeing Texas. We cannot allow these rogue legislators to avoid their constitutional responsibilities," Cornyn said in a news release.
The FBI declined to comment on the matter.

(882 posts)What federal crime has the Texas Democrats committed?
The FBI can help locate the Texas Democrats but under what federal statute can they arrest them? I serious doubt the FBI will arrest them. They can tell Gov. Abbott where the Democrats are staying but that's about all. Texas could send it's law enforcement agents to arrest them but they don't have authority to make arrests in Illinois.
Having the FBI involved is an attempt to intimidate the Texas Democrats into returning but I have a feeling they're not backing down. For a change, when Democrats enter a knife fight they're bringing their knives.

(34,006 posts)Unless some are "hiding in Texas", this stunt is mostly for show!
Some may also unknowingly come back to Texas and FBI would have access to flight records etc...
Hold strong Texas Dems!

(16,926 posts)Congress (or not return after the Epstein recess) in support of Texas Democrats. Theyve (Rs, now, more accurately, Trumpers) already broken our system of governance. We might as well break it further when it benefits democracy.

(45,685 posts)Apparently you are unaware that the standard for a quorum in the US House and Senste is a simple majority.
So if every Democrat walked out the republicans, who have a majority in both chambers would have unfettered ability to do any they want. For example, the Senate republicans could vote to change any of the standing rules of the Senste something that ordinarily takes 3/5 of those present and voting.

(7,877 posts)So what is the Federal issue that would trigger the FBI to step in? It looks to me like a matter to be handled by Texas law enforcement. The States get involved in extradition orders between them, but that still leaves it a matter between the States. Whatever happened to due process? How is this legal?
Indeed, I don't understand what law in Texas has been broken. Yes, they violate rules governing the Texas Legislature, which would make it a matter for the Sergeant at Arms to address. But I fail to see where the FBI has jurisdiction, let alone the Texas Rangers or Austin Police.
