ICE Arrests Plunge in Humiliating Blow to Stephen Miller

ICED OUT
The top ally of President Donald Trump has been demanding that ICE detain at least 3,000 migrants day.
Ewan Palmer Aug. 5 2025 10:25AM EDT
The number of arrests made by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) dropped by nearly 20 percent between June and July, despite Stephen Miller pushing the agency to detain thousands of migrants a day.
Figures from the nonpartisan Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) show that ICE booked an average of 990 arrests per day from July 1 to July 27, a sharp 19 percent drop from the daily rate of 1,224 arrests recorded in June.
Both months fall far short of the 3,000-a-day arrests Miller has demanded to fulfill President Donald Trumps plan to carry out the largest mass deportation in U.S. history. The White House deputy chief of staff, credited as the architect of many of Trumps hardline immigration policies, was reportedly so aggressive he even threatened to fire ICE field office leaders who ranked in the bottom 10 percent for migrant arrests.

Trump administration attorneys are now walking back claims in court that Miller ever set such an ambitious arrest target, despite Miller explicitly telling Fox News Sean Hannity he was putting it in place in May.
In late July, a federal judge asked Department of Justice attorney Yaakov Roth whether ICE was under pressure to meet an arrest quota, and if that meant people were being rounded up based on race or ethnicity to hit the numbers.
The DoJ has now denied the existence of a daily quota for immigration arrests in Wednesday filings to the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

(3,599 posts)...is that this perennial number of "12M undocumented people" in the US was a fake number, and that the number never was that high. But, everyone glommed on to that number and assumed that there was a pool of "illegals" here so deep that you could go on for years arresting 3k people per day and never run out.
I believe that there are so few out-of-status and deportable people left that ICE just can't find 3k/day any longer. That's one reason why they're slowing from deporting real criminals and are instead deporting people who are easier to tag, like people with even the tiniest marks on their record - the Japanese Mormon green card holder who was deported for having a citation for fishing without a license 6 years prior, and people who had stray marks on their original permanent resident applications.
Even when we had 12M "illegals" here, I never believed illegal immigration was a real problem. I agree were were having problems with illegal border crossings until recently, and that was somewhat of a crisis. But, ICE and CBP were actively handling that. There was no need to go Nazi on the American people.

(33,933 posts)than actual criminals. One of my husband's cousins was undocumented until the Bush admin required passports. Prior to that, he saw no reason to become a citizen. And the reason he became a citizen was because he visits family in Nuevo Laredo.
So, I think there are lot of people who just never got around to it. Didn't think of it, didn't have the required documentation, it wasn't necessary etc etc....
Also due process is not being followed and that's another violation right there.
They also are sweeping up US citizens. It's pretty sick when US citizens need to carry passports. And also the "masked ICE agents". (what's up with that?)
Tyler Perry needs to do a "Madea Gets Deported" movie. (Although Madea has a record)
I don't know why they've slowed down. Maybe bad publicity, maybe lawsuits?????

(38,640 posts)... just like he fires anyone who gives him "bad news." In his first term Chump fired half of his staff and several cabinet members before the first year was over. Also Chump fires anyone who makes HIM look bad, which Miller is definitely doing now.

(58,398 posts)I don't know if that is for 5 years or 10. Suppose 10 at 1,000 per day. That's 3,650,000, so about $11,000 to deport each person. But I doubt they can get that many people to deport.
They drank their own koolaid: "20 to 30 million illegals" (their word).

(2,823 posts)... or even acknowledges, the irrefutable fact that this didn't become the crisis that it is today until "Jellybeans-For-Brains" Reagan used illicit funds from illegal weapons sales to Iran for delaying the release of the hostages in 1980 before he was even elected to fund, train, and equip death squads all over Central America because DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED leaders refused to bend the knee to corporate interests that wanted to steal and exploit their resources, resulting in the failed gangster-states that people now risk their lives every day to escape.
