WASHINGTON A United Airlines flight traveling from Washington Dulles International Airport made an emergency landing last month after the pilot declared a mayday call shortly after takeoff due to suspected engine failure.
United Flight 108, bound for Munich, Germany, was forced to return to Dulles on July 25 "to address a mechanical issue," the airline told CNN.
The plane, a Boeing 787, was carrying 219 passengers and 11 crew members, the airline said.
Minutes into its ascent and at nearly 5,000 feet, the pilot told air traffic control, "Engine failure, left engine, United 108 declaring an emergency. Mayday, mayday, mayday," according to recorded air traffic control audio.

(5,194 posts)wasn't engine failure, the captain cut fuel to the engines.

And then one of the pilots says why did you do that and the other one says he didn't and then 10 seconds later they get turned back on but by then it was too late, it's going to be suicide by Pilot most likely.
And the other crash, Jeju Air in Korea the pilots turned off of the wrong engine after the bird strike, not the first time that's happened either.
Hard to blame Boeing for that, and the engine's also are manufactured by someone else not Boeing.

(5,194 posts)was that as they took off, the captain cut the fuel to the engines. The co-pilot asked him why he did that, he denied doing it, the co-pilot restored fuel to the engines and tried to keep the plane in the air. There was never time for a struggle. The reasons for the captain's behavior is now being investigated.

(379 posts)It is unlikely to be a Boeing issue, they don''t make the engines nor do the maintenance on them. 787s are powered by either GE or Rolls Royce engines. A quick google didn't turn up which one United is using. Somewhere around 2/3 of currently flying 787s have GE engines.

The problem was with the engine. Boeing does not make engines. The 787 engines are made by GE.
Not to leave out United that has maintenance responsibility.
A lot of DU posters said the same thing, blaming Boeing immediately after the Air India flight last month when the fault was the pilot.

No rush, but yes, plenty of judgment.

(4,111 posts)Except they designed planes with only two engines for cheaper long haul flights. The airline is responsible for scheduling those planes over large expanses of ocean.
I agree with the pilots decision to return when half of his (two) engines are inoperable for whatever reason.
