A federal judge on Monday ruled Planned Parenthood clinics nationwide must continue to be reimbursed for Medicaid funding as the nations largest abortion provider fights President Donald Trumps administration over efforts to defund the organization in his signature tax legislation.
The new order replaces a previous edict handed down by U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani in Boston last week. Talwani initially granted a preliminary injunction specifically blocking the government from cutting Medicaid payments to Planned Parenthood members that didnt provide abortion care or didnt meet a threshold of at least $800,000 in Medicaid reimbursements in a given year.
Patients are likely to suffer adverse health consequences where care is disrupted or unavailable, Talwani wrote in her Monday order. In particular, restricting Members ability to provide healthcare services threatens an increase in unintended pregnancies and attendant complications because of reduced access to effective contraceptives, and an increase in undiagnosed and untreated STIs.
A provision in Trumps tax bill instructed the federal government to end Medicaid payments for one year to abortion providers that received more than $800,000 from Medicaid in 2023, even to those like Planned Parenthood that also offer medical services like contraception, pregnancy tests and STD testing.

(8,453 posts)...or until the decision is appealed (and I'm sure it will be).
I don't want Planned Parenthood defunded, but I'm not sure why the judge thinks the plaintiffs will win the case in the end, as I would think that Congress has the ability to decide what they will and won't fund.
But at least it's on hold for now.

(8,453 posts)and I guess I just need to go find the ruling and read it
on what basis is the law not valid?
If it were an EO, I could see shutting it down, but unless its unconstitutional, I dont under the ruling.
Apparently 1A, "bill of attainder", and equal protection.
Might look at it myself, but don't wanna.

(167 posts)That is a total guarantee to get the anti-abortion crowds' dander up. Why not instead refer to them as what they are, "the nations largest provider of woman's healthcare services" which includes abortion (less that 3% of the services they provide I believe). It would certainly be way more accurate and to the point, yes?
