BOISE, Idaho (AP) A pickup truck and a tour van collided on a highway leading to Yellowstone National Park, leaving seven people dead and eight others injured, Idaho State Police said.
The crash happened just before 7:15 p.m. Thursday near Henrys Lake State Park in eastern Idaho, police said in a press release. The state park is roughly 16 miles (26 kilometers) west of Yellowstone National Park.
Authorities have not said what led up to the crash.
Both vehicles caught fire, the Idaho State Police said in a press release. The driver of the Dodge Ram pickup and six people inside the Mercedes passenger van died. The van was carrying a tour group of 14 people, and the surviving occupants were taken to hospitals with injuries, police spokesman Aaron Snell said.

(96,632 posts)It was in Idaho, either on Henry's lake Flats or Targhee Pass just east of the Flats. The nearest entrance to the park is half an hour from there. So it was either on US20 or ID84.

I'd guess the tour group was coming to W. Yellowstone from Boise, or vice-versa. That's 5 hours-plus.
If they'd started in Bozeman, they wouldn't be near Henry's Lake.

(96,632 posts)It's about 2 miles from the bottom of Targhee Pass on the Idaho side, 1.5 miles from the beginning of the flats. My friend's house is right there, 100 ft up the road from the wreck.
