US steps back from peace talks, saying it won't mediate between Russia and Ukraine

Source: The Independent

Friday 02 May 2025 16:26 EDT

The US will no longer mediate between Russia and Ukraine, leaving the two countries themselves to work out how to end the war, a state department official says. Tammy Bruce said American envoys would no longer fly around the world “at the drop of a hat” to act as a go-between in peace talks.

It was now “between the two parties” to present concrete ideas on how the conflict would end, she insisted, although the US remained committed to helping. She said the US was changing the methodology of how it contributed to the conflict, adding: “We will not be the mediators.”

US president Donald Trump and vice-president JD Vance have both previously warned that they could walk away from peace talks if there was no progress in negotiations on a ceasefire.

On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that either there would need to be a breakthrough towards peace “very soon” or Mr Trump would have to decide how much time the US would dedicate to the conflict. “This is not our war,” he said.

and once they got some framework together and agreed to (in order to milk the country of its natural resources), they're done, like good little vulture capitalists.

Trump is now in bed with Zelenskyy because of the minerals deal. And it looks like that's the way Russia sees it too.
"Russia worries about a U.S. tilt toward Ukraine after minerals deal
Since the new administration’s start, it seemed Russia’s needs and views of the war were being promoted by Trump officials, but the tone appears to be changing."

Nobody has a clear idea of what deposits of what minerals are where in Ukraine because the last comprehensive surveys were conducted by the Soviets up to 60 years ago, and Ukraine will need to carry out new ones with modern technology if and when Putin can be encouraged to get to fuck.

A widespread assumption is that Trump and those who've encouraged him to pursue this deal have an exaggerated idea of the extent and value of the deposits. It at least seems to have unlocked Trump's stonewalling of arms sales to Ukraine.

Trump has a signed deal for mineral rights.
That is the only thing he cares about.
He will protect the minerals.

I'm pretty sure that makes it a "Conflict of Interest", doesn't it? I wonder who walks away with all the chips? Wasn't that a "Dick Dastardly" plot? Nothing's New.
