A Trump White House insider torched special envoy Steve Witkoff as a “bumbling fucking idiot” in frustration at the former real estate magnate’s approach to diplomacy and, in particular, his one-on-one meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “Nice guy, but a bumbling fucking idiot,” the anonymous Trump administration official told the New York Post.

The real estate attorney-turned-diplomat has reportedly sidelined U.S. experts, leaning on Russian translators during critical talks, including last Friday’s meeting with Putin, who brought along top aides. “He should not be doing this alone,” the insider said.

Witkoff’s freelance diplomacy is raising alarm across Washington and foreign capitals alike, according to the New York Post. In the Russia-Ukraine conflict, he has no mandate to deal with Kyiv — that job belongs to retired Gen. Keith Kellogg — yet he’s empowered to negotiate directly with Moscow, effectively functioning as Trump’s in-house Kremlin conduit. The result is a diplomatic split where Kellogg hammers out cease-fire terms with Ukraine while Witkoff floats concessions like recognizing Crimea as Russian — a nonstarter for Kyiv.

“He is not negotiating anything,” former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul said via X on Saturday. “Witkoff acts as a mailman for Putin.” Even more damning, the report points out how Russian media has picked up on Witkoff’s apparent echoing of Russian government positions. In a March interview with MAGA personality Tucker Carlson, he parroted Kremlin talking points and bungled the names of Ukraine’s occupied territories, calling them “so-called four regions” and referring to referendums conducted under armed Russian guards as legitimate.
