Trump admin launches race-based discrimination probe into Harvard Law Review

Source: Axios

Updated 11 hours ago

The Trump administration is ramping up its fight against Harvard, launching investigations Monday into the university and the Harvard Law Review for alleged race-based discrimination.

The big picture: The administration has employed a pressure campaign against the Ivy League school, coming down on the university with several actions including a $2.2 billion funding freeze and considerations to revoke its tax-exempt status and its eligibility to host foreign students.

Driving the news: The civil rights offices of the departments of Education and Health and Human Services are investigating allegations that the Harvard Law Review, which is published by a student-run group, makes decisions in its article selections process based on race, per an Education Department statement.

  • The departments will look to determine whether there were Title VI violations, and they'll examine Harvard's relationship with the journal, including financial ties, oversight procedures and selection policies.
  • "Harvard Law Review's article selection process appears to pick winners and losers on the basis of race, employing a spoils system in which the race of the legal scholar is as, if not more, important than the merit of the submission," said Craig Trainor, the Education Department's acting assistant secretary for civil rights, in a statement.

  • What they're saying: "Harvard Law School is committed to ensuring that the programs and activities it oversees are in compliance with all applicable laws and to investigating any credibly alleged violations," spokesperson Jeff Neal told Axios in an emailed statement.

Obama was once president of the Harvard Law Review (its first Black president). This was 34 years ago, in 1990, but Trump never forgets grudges. But of course in Trump's tiny brain Obama was chosen only because he was Black, not because he was a good writer or smart or anything like that, because of course Black people can't get anywhere without affirmative action or DEI or whatever. The Law Review is a separate, student-run entity that doesn't even get federal funding, but that doesn't matter. Are they going to sue the Law Reviews of every other law school, or only Harvard? Or are they going to go looking for others that also might have had Black editors or members?

    why THIS happened.

Because they are just that obsessively craven and insanely jealous.

I expect they will go after Norway and the Nobel Committee as well. It's what someone who is neurotic would do.

The focus of their inquiry is on the articles selection process, not the process of selecting officers. And Obama never had a signed article published while he was a student at Harvard.

because ALL of this is nothing more than stunt investigations to feed red meat to their MAGat base. However it does force the victims of their fishing expedition, to expend resources to respond to their ridiculous demands (which is the other intent), while they waste tax payer money, for fraudulent purposes, through abuse of the intent of the law,

    10. Trump doesn't want to piss off the Nobel Committee; he desperately wants that Peace Prize

not in small part because Obama got one - which is why he's tying himself in knots trying to stop Putin from bombing Ukraine without pissing him off, too. He figures the prize is in the bag if he can broker a Ukraine peace deal, but neither Putin nor Zelenskyy is cooperating. In any event, I can't think of another reason why he'd be meeting with the Prime Minister of Norway and its Finance Minister (the former SecGen of NATO) except to suck up to them, Norway being a small country without a lot of power (except for oil and money). But the Nobel Committee is nominated by the Norwegian Parliament, so he probably figures buttering up the PM and an important Minister might get him some pull with the committee. I very much doubt it. Stoltenberg already knows Trump too well from NATO.

so Norway would be a piece of cake.

And Obama's Nobel is exactly why I brought this up. Ever since that WHCD dig, he hasn't forgiven him and hasn't shown up to one of their events since.

The man is sick and someone needs to bring out the hook and pull him off the stage.

Definitely DON'T put anything past him. We are seeing what happens when some warned about his "promises" and it was waived away as a bunch of hooey, but is now coming to fruition.

Right now, the federal government has literally been gutted - FOR REAL. It's not "hyperbole" or "rhetoric". People HAVE literally lost their jobs and/or retired and there is nothing but skeletal remains of it at the moment and the media is dutifully reporting on it as if they are narrating an action/adventure movie.

He could suddenly "impose" a "China-level" set of tariffs on them to attempt to force their hand (and piss them off even more). It's all he knows - bullying.
