Amazon to display tariff costs for consumers

Source: Punchbowl News

Amazon doesn’t want to shoulder the blame for the cost of President Donald Trump’s trade war.

So the e-commerce giant will soon show how much Trump’s tariffs are adding to the price of each product, according to a person familiar with the plan.

The shopping site will display how much of an item’s cost is derived from tariffs – right next to the product’s total listed price.

the pre-tariff price of the product/item.

All stores should adapt this type of price labeling.

The other benefit of such price-labeling is that it could help weed out those greedy merchants that take advantage of the tariffs and price up products that are not subject to a tariff. You know - those products that the price goes up on a product that is just the greed of the merchant using the tariff excuse for them raising the price - just so they can push their profits.

A lot of that was going on during the 'pandemic'. Pushing prices higher - just so they could use the 'pandemic' as an excuse.

They take advantage of any old excuse to raise prices and make more money.

I don’t think it was ever repealed.
There are many more & it would be really nice if consumers knew how much tariffs were costing them, most people have no idea & our media doesn't report it.

And pointed. It will be a difficult measure to argue against. I'm morbidly curious as to the format and direction of the criticisms this will get.

Which has billions of dollars in comtracts with the government. In 2019 Trump bombed the AWS contracts because he didn't like something the WaPo wrote.

If Amazon is honest about breaking out the tariff costs, then GOOD for them.

But I'm afraid that some retailers are going to jack-up prices whether or not the tariffs actually impact the merchandise. If everything that originates in China goes up 20% retail (for example) how many retailers will increase pricing across the board for everything? I'm afraid this is happening already because we consumers have no way of knowing.

Amazon retreats on tariff cost tag after White House calls it ‘hostile’

Amazon is reportedly backing off its plan to display tariff costs for consumers on its website next to its products, something the White House described as a “hostile act.”

“This is a hostile and political act by Amazon,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters this week. “Why didn’t Amazon do this when the Biden administration hiked inflation to the highest level in 40 years?”

Amazon’s plan, according to a report from Punchbowl News, would have displayed the amount of money added as a result of the tariffs displayed right next to each product’s total listed price. But a spokesperson for the company claimed Amazon never considered this strategy.

“The team that runs our ultra-low-cost Amazon Haul store has considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products,” the spokesperson told ABC. “Teams discuss ideas all the time. This was never a consideration for the main Amazon site and nothing has been implemented on any Amazon properties.”
