Mike Johnson Reacts to Donald Trump's Dropping Approval Ratings

Source: Newsweek

Published Apr 28, 2025 at 5:41 PM EDT | Updated Apr 28, 2025 at 5:44 PM EDT

Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana brushed off any concerns about President Donald Trump's dropping approval ratings on Monday. Newsweek reached out to the White House for comment on Monday.

Why It Matters

Sliding in the polls could damage Trump's political clout in an already highly polarized climate and potentially hurt Republican chances in the upcoming 2026 midterms. Trump has routinely touted positive approval ratings and polling during news conferences and campaign rallies throughout his political career.

When the president returned to the White House in January, he coasted in with positive numbers. But his approval ratings have dipped significantly in the last few weeks, particularly after his administration rolled out sweeping tariffs on countries across the globe. The policy sparked mass confusion among U.S. trading partners and adversaries and destabilized global markets as the administration waffled between implementing tariffs, rolling them back, introducing exemptions for some industries and later removing them.

What To Know

After meeting with Trump at the White House about the 2026 midterm elections, Johnson was asked by CNN's Manu Raju whether he was concerned Trump's approval ratings could cost the GOP the House of Representatives. Johnson replied: "No, I'm not worried at all. I just had a great meeting with the president at the White House and he's in good spirts, and we are as well... We're very bullish on it [2026] ... We are playing offense."

10. "and 60+ senators are in the Senate"

You won't even need 60 in the Senate when using the "reconciliation" process, which is how they are proceeding to DO the tax cuts for billionaires right now.

That same process, that only requires a simple majority in the Senate, can REPEAL those tax cuts. The issue would be the "messaging" about that because the GOP will skew it for being "tax increases for everyone" (versus who would actually be targeted).

Maybe there is a need to start calling it "raising revenue to fund (fill in the blank)...".

Being offensive no longer so attractive when MAGAs realize the beast is at your door and your house is built of sticks, not stones.
