Mass shooting in Myrtle Beach tourist hotspot leaves 11 injured, suspect killed by police

Source: The Independent

Sunday 27 April 2025 16:20 EDT

At least 11 people were injured and one suspect was killed in an officer-involved mass shooting in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The Myrtle Beach Police Department revealed on Facebook that officers responded to an incident at roughly 11:50 p.m. Saturday. Officers “observed a disturbance involving multiple individuals” on North Ocean Boulevard, the statement said.

One person fired a weapon during an “altercation,” prompting an officer to respond by discharging their firearm. The officer wasn’t injured, but the suspect died as a result of their injuries. On Sunday, Horry County deputy coroner Tamara Willard identified the individual shot by police as Jerrius Davis, 18, from Bennettsville, according to News 13. Video obtained by the outlet shows people running from the scene as police approach the disturbance.

“In accordance with established protocol, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) will conduct an independent investigation,” Myrtle Beach Police said on Facebook. “Simultaneously, the Myrtle Beach Police Department will carry out an internal review of the incident.” “Our officer saw what happened, and when he saw that an altercation was taking place and a gun was being shot, the officer responded very quickly and in my opinion, saved lives,” Mayor Brenda Bethune told News13. “Last night could have been so much worse.”

The mayor said the eventual SLED report into the incident will be publicly released. “Unfortunately, with social media, there’s going to be a lot of comments being said that are not true, and [people] trying to make more out of this, and we want to get the facts out so that people know what has happened,” she said.

that's the general area of the Bowery. Can be a pretty rowdy place on a Saturday night.

Doesn't sound like a mass shooting though. Story coming out sounds like it was a massive brawl on the street and somebody pulled out a gun, then got shot themselves by the officer/s there.

Can't find a report that anyone besides the one guy got shot.

Not nearly enough information.

11 people injured != 11 people injured by shooting.

They would know who may have gone to the hospital for any injuries including anything like graze wounds.

From a Greenville, SC article -

11 injured, 1 dead in a shooting involving police at Myrtle Beach, SLED investigating

I've seen 1 eye witness report that a woman was shot in the knee and found a video showing her. The person taking the video indicates that the police shot her, not the man with the gun.

When bullets start flying from multiple guns - in this case, at a minimum, from both a suspected shooter and a cop, then as people are scrambling, you will inevitably have people "caught in the crossfire".

That is why the articles mention a "SLED" (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) investigation. There is usually "extra" done when there is an "officer-involved shooting", and moreso since a suspect is now deceased.

The forensics investigators and lab will be able to determine what bullets hit who and came from what gun or guns.

I didn't feel like going down the rabbit hole, so early after the shooting. Will all the injuries be gunshot wounds? Who knows at this point.

But I will start...
The most commonly accepted definition of a mass shooting is 4 or more victims, shot or injured.

I read an article where a witness described this

A witness told ABC 15 what he saw on Saturday night at the scene.
https://abcnews4.com/news/crime-news/police-investigating-after-shooting-incident-on-north-ocean-blvd-in-myrtle-beach
I remember hearing gunfire shots just start going off everywhere. I remember seeing a girl fall that had been injured; I remember seeing the guy who had been shot fall to the ground," said Michael Howard, witness. "I seen blood everywhere. It was just very traumatizing.

What many people fail to realize mass shooting, mass murder, and spree killers all have different definitions. None are mutually exclusive of each other.

Mass murder is 4 or more killed in a single event.

Spree killers are murders that occur in a single event, in multiple locations. Sometimes called rampage killers.

I've been an EMT on a volunteer rescue squad in rural Virginia for 15 years. One of the first lessons you learn -- Nothing good happens after midnight. After midnight -- or close to midnight -- it's booze, drugs, guns, knives, boyfriend-girlfriend, husband-girlfriend-wife, motorcycle-tree . . . .

besides the gunman.

Typical police response in these situations is to blaze away without regard to bystanders.
