Son of CIA deputy director was killed while fighting for Russia, report shows

Source: The Guardian

Michael Alexander Gloss, 21, who died on 4 April 2024, was the son of top-ranking US spy Juliana Gallina

An American man identified as the son of a deputy director of the CIA was killed in eastern Ukraine in 2024 while fighting under contract for the Russian military, according to an investigation by independent Russian media.

Michael Alexander Gloss, 21, died on 4 April 2024 in “Eastern Europe”, according to an obituary published by his family. He was the son of Juliane Gallina, who was appointed the deputy director for digital innovation at the Central Intelligence Agency in February 2024.

The story of how the son of a top-ranking US spy died fighting for Vladimir Putin’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine is an unlikely tale of how homegrown anger at the United States and online radicalisation led from a middle-class Virginia childhood to the killing fields of eastern Ukraine.

They are on the killing fields in Russia and Ukraine.

And they are amidst us in the US trying to destroy our country. Some working in the upper levels of the government.

“With his noble heart and warrior spirit Michael was forging his own hero’s journey when he was tragically killed in Eastern Europe on April 4, 2024,” his family wrote in the obituary, which did not mention Russia and Ukraine or discuss the circumstances of his death.

She described him as a "hero," but he was literally taking up arms in support of our enemy, Russia.

I have no problem with her keeping her job at literally any other job except anywhere in our intelligence apparatus. She clearly cannot be trusted to keep our secrets and stay on our side in intelligence battles with our enemies. Did the CIA know her son was fighting with the Russian army? You can't even get a job in intelligence if your immediate relatives are not US citizens, for fear your loyalties might waver. Her son was a Russian soldier, for fuck's sake.

I'm under the impression that if you apply for even low level positions in the CIA, NSA, etc. they interview almost everyone who ever knew you well. The article says that they are a "middle class" family. I guess in current parlance that means families with a net worth between 1 and 10 million dollars and who are headed only by deputy directors. This seems to be a "rank has its privileges" situation.

The article doesn't say anything about his mom's views on Russia. Republicans don't try to hide it these days. CIA definitely knew about her son.

She was appointed in 2024, under the Biden Administration.

For Immediate Release: February 7, 2024

Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Director William J. Burns appointed Juliane Gallina to serve as CIA’s new Deputy Director for Digital Innovation. Ms. Gallina has been part of the intelligence and technology communities for more than 30 years in a wide range of roles from military, civil service, and industry. She most recently served as the Associate Deputy Director for Digital Innovation and previously in the dual-hatted role of Chief Information Officer and the Director of the Information Technology Enterprise at the Agency.

Ms. Gallina will drive initiatives and partnerships to enhance the Agency’s ability to leverage digital technology and innovations to further CIA’s mission. "Juliane brings a wealth of experience from holding multiple leadership positions at the Agency, in the Intelligence Community, and the private sector. Her exceptional breadth of experience, as well as her passion for technology and the Agency workforce make her a natural selection to lead the Directorate of Digital Innovation at this critical time,” said Director Burns.

“It is an honor to be asked to lead the Directorate of Digital Innovation. Throughout my career, I’ve reflected that there are three elements to the perfect job: great people, great technology, great mission—and I’ve been delighted to find all three while serving at CIA. We are in the right place at the right time for positive mission impact,” said Ms. Gallina. Prior to her leadership roles at CIA, Ms. Gallina worked in the private sector as the Vice President of IBM’s Federal Key Accounts. Before joining IBM, she served as a CIA Directorate of Science and Technology officer assigned to the National Reconnaissance Office. Ms. Gallina began her federal service as a US Navy cryptologic officer and retired from the US Navy Reserves in 2013. She holds a Master of Science in both Space Systems and Electrical Engineering. While at the US Naval Academy, Ms. Gallina was the first woman to lead the brigade of midshipmen since its founding in 1846.

My mind went sideways in adolescence and young adulthood.

When I was 21 my parents had no idea where I was or what sorts of trouble I was getting into. I'd pretty much worn them out. They no longer had the energy or the financial resources to deal with my kind of crazy.

Fortunately I survived, albeit with some significant PTSD. Somehow I'd managed to avoid the worst sorts of human predators and self-destructive tendencies.

I'd started talking to my parents again by the time I was 25 but I never told them my worst stories.

That's probably why I'm not seeing any deep conspiracies here. Various sorts of mental illness were common in my family and we were very good at hiding them.

I've known people from very devout and religious parents who went full on bore against it. Eventually, the hypocrisy overwhelms the logic. Could have this been similar? Too much patriotism and indoctrination? I'm amazed that I still came out as a believer. Granted, nothing like my parents or rest of family.
